Art has as many ways of expressing itself as human beings have the world, and it goes beyond the fine arts and the so-called minor arts (popular arts such as crafts). If there is something interesting about contemporary art, it is that it has expanded the possibilities of this term in an impressive way, sometimes even questionable.

Ephemeral art is one of those "new" expressions, and it consists of a plastic art that, due to the nature of its materials, has a short life span. In this category fall the installations that are done a lot in today's museums, and also works such as ice and sand sculptures, to give simple examples.

An artist who simply calls himself Gaku , and who is presumably of Japanese origin, has chosen carving as his artistic expression, but has chosen not wood or stone to work with, but fruits and vegetables.

Surely we have all seen a dish with radishes cut into a flower shape, well, Gaku takes that to another level, one that truly surprises, and that falls into the category of ephemeral art. Inspired by the Japanese food carving art known as mukimono, he carves oranges, radishes, cucumbers, pitahayas, carrots, broccoli, watermelons, melons, aubergines and even avocados with an x-act knife, with astonishing results.

Here are some images of his work, and I recommend you visit his account at Instagram to follow up on his very particular form of expression.
