Indonesia has known for a variety of tribes and languages, one of which is the Minahasa tribe in North of Sulawesi island. Various cultures, of course, have a unique variety of uniqueness, finding out it's history must that cultural so insights become a wider.

Kabasaran. Hearing it's name, many people immediately cringe. Not caused they are brave men with swords ready to draw. Or the appearance looks fierce when the eyes widen in red clothing. Even with his neck accessories seeing various skulls lined up to make the neck stand on end.

But the dancers in red clothes, bulging eyes, ferocious faces, accompanied by drums while carrying swords and sharp spears, actually make this Kabasaran charisma never fade. The dominant clothing color is red with various accessories in the form of a hat decorated with wings and beaks of a bird (buceros exaratus) or other types of birds. Necklace with a skull of a monkey (macaca nigra), bracelets and others add to the perfection of a mighty warrior.

It's the Waraney who has an honest, brave and wise nature. The symbol of resilience of the Malesung Nation or the Land of Minahasa which has a meaning that the descendants of the Malesung nation must always maintain the land of Minahasa so that it is always peaceful. In the contemporer era where the Waraney are required to be diligent in working, building the region, fighting for their children and grandchildren.

Each kabasaran dancer has a sharp weapon which is a legacy from their previous ancestors, because the kabyek dancer is a dancer who has passed down from generation to generation. This dance generally consists of three stages (in fact there are more than three, only, now this is very rarely done).

The rounds consist of:

  • First, Cakalele, which comes from the word "saka" which means competing, and "lele" means chasing after jumping. This round was once danced when the soldiers would go to war or return from war. Or, this round shows the ferocity of war on great guests, to provide a sense of security to the great guests who come to visit that even the devils are afraid to disturb the great guests from escorting Kabasaran dancers.

  • The second round is called Kumoyak, which comes from the word "torn" meaning, swinging a sharp weapon sword or spear up and down, back and forth to pacify themselves from anger when fighting. The word "torn" itself, can mean to persuade the spirit of the enemy or opponent who has been killed in battle.

  • Then Lalaya’an. In this part, the dancers danced freely happily escaping from anger, like dancing "Lionda" with their hands on their waist and other cheerful dances. The whole dance is based on the command or command of the dance leader called "Tumu-tuzuk" (Tombulu) or "Sarian" (Tonsea).

  • The cue is given in the sub-ethnic languages of Tombulu, Tonsea, Tondano, Totemboan, Ratahan, Tombatu and Bantik. In this dance, all dancers must express Garang without being allowed to smile, except in the past round, where the dancers are allowed to indulge in cheerful smiles. The Kabyek dance movement basically consists of nine sword movements (santi / kelewang) and nine spear movements (wengkou) with steps foot 4/4, which is two steps left and two steps to the right.

The rules for dancing are so strict and clear. In the movement of the sword and spear, that is the sword (santi / kelewang) should not be used to stab and deflect, the spear (wengkou) is only for piercing movements while for parrying it should only be a shield (kelung).

It is so much love and passion we can feel reading the post and it is impressive how beautiful the costumes and the dance with such impressive weapons. The people should be proud of its tradition and it is a good way to teach the young people so that this lives further and goes from generation to generation :)
