Magellan Monument
This monument was built in 1866 and is dedicated to the Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand Magellan or Fernando/Hernando de Magallanes in Spanish. He was tasked by the King of Spain to search for a westward route to Asia and came across Cebu in 1521. In an effort to convert the locals in Mactan Island to Christianity, the "Battle of Mactan" took place between Magellan and the Spanish forces against the chieftain Lapu-Lapu and his men. Magellan died in the battle.
