Guardia

Guard

Leonard stretched in his seat, opened his mouth as wide as the corners of his lips would allow and exhaled a long, loud yawn, it was the four hundred and ninety-third day of his watch, in only seven more days, he could return to Earth, the world he knew would have aged twenty years, more than the almost two that had passed for him, it was the penalty he had to pay for being two million Terrans less poor, but for someone with no family, no obligations, it was a small cost to pay.

He patted the console, which seemed to extend in front of his comfortable seat, from one side to the other as far as his eyes could see, and the deep darkness that extended over his head, suddenly lit up with a fluorescence that ascended in intensity from red, through orange and yellow, to an intense white color, which made his pupils contract, until it became a tiny dot, revealing the gigantic dome that covered him.

His tiny control panel was at the far end of a huge room, covered by a dome, in which, suddenly, what looked like an underwater scene began to be projected, with hundreds of strange creatures swimming, in an infinite number of curious ways, from one side to the other, forming peculiar and beautiful patterns.

In effect Leonard was in a dome-shaped building, submerged in one of the moons of Sextant Lambda c, a satellite of the dimensions of the Earth, with a gravity and density almost equal, but without solid ground on its surface; and that served as one of the surveillance points of the perimeter of the human control sector of the galaxy.

Leonard as the only inhabitant of that underwater building, was the guard operator of the defense systems that are distributed throughout the planetary system of Sextant Lambda. He was the only human in more than four light years around, and several dozen more, from the nearest colony planet.

More than an operator, he was a sort of janitor, since everything in that building worked automatically, it did not require any human to operate the weapons systems, an AI would take over, in case some unwitting hostile dared to enter the range of the sensors.

His job was to make sure everything was in order, to be attentive to replenish the backup batteries in case they ran out, to replace the filters of the main computer's atmosphere purification systems, to clean the reactors' cooling water circulation ducts, in case some little animal thought of getting into them, and other endless boring and monotonous tasks that took up a good part of his time.

There was no place in that facility that was alien to him, his duties had led him to know every nook and cranny of the building. However, for several days a doubt had been tormenting him. During the cleaning of the water inlet ducts, he had had to use a remotely piloted submersible to replace the protective grids of the inlets, and while walking along the west wall of the engine building, he discovered a porthole for an airlock that he had never known existed.

While he watched in rapt attention the valet of creatures that danced around the dome projected inside it, he thought about where that airlock would lead to, beset by doubt, he stood up, and left the dome walking along the corridor that would take him to the engine room, a building that joined the dome through a long tunnel, once there he headed to the west wing.

As he walked through the corridors that vibrated to the rhythm of the machinery that filled his quarters, he thought about what he would do upon his return to Earth with all the money he would be paid, his old life seemed so far away that it was almost a blurred memory, he was a top mechanic in the military, his time was spent in hours and hours of disassembling and assembling antimatter engines, of transport ships.

When he returned, he would never work again, he would take half of what he would be paid and invest it in buying a fleet of robot harvesters and put them to work cleaning the orbit, there was good money in that job and with the rest he would buy several beautiful airmansions, he would use one to live in and the others he would lease. He would spend the rest of his life watching the poor mortals on the surface from his mansion in the clouds, laughing at their misfortunes.

He came to a nook he had traveled before and where he always noticed that the corridor seemed to end abruptly at a junction to the left, which was not there in the east wing, where instead, the reactor cooling system consumables depot was located.

He felt the wall and sensed that something was wrong, he felt a vibration that should not be there, because it was supposed to be only insulation behind, he used the structure scanner to detect if there was wiring or pipes behind and noticed that the wall seemed to hide a hollow space, and also harbored a breathable atmosphere, something very strange, thinking of the argon-filled or completely empty rooms, where most of the machinery in the room operated.

He took the handsaw from his belt and began to cut the wall covering to see what was behind it, and after dismantling the one half of the wall, he found a hidden door. What the hell was that place, he wondered, no one had told him it was there, and it was not on the plans of the installation, he took the handle that he supposed was used to open it, and praying not to find some military secret that would cost him the reward he had been promised, he pulled it and the door slid open, revealing a vast hallway filled with what looked like dozens of hibernation pods, he stepped inside and realized that the hallway he saw was not the only one to his right and left the room stretched out, revealing dozens of similar parallel hallways.

A strange shiver ran down his spine as he approached the first of the capsules and peered into a sort of porthole, which, like a window, peered inside, inside he could see the pale, sleeping face of a woman in her thirties. He saw the small plaque under the window with the name Laila written on it, followed by the number 3344.

He walked a few more steps and looked out the window of the next capsule and just like the previous one, there was a person inside, this time it was a man, also in his thirties, dark and with curly hair, he looked at the plaque and was surprised to see what it said, Leonard 3344.

Surprised, he jumped back and looked at his chest, the name embroidered on his uniform, Leonard 124, that number of which he had always been unaware of its meaning, began to make sense, what was all that, what were all those people doing there.

As he shuddered with fear and surprise, he could not notice how, silently, through one of the corridors, approached behind him, carrying a hypodermic pistol between the three fingers of his hand, a huge figure of about two and a half meters tall, who grabbed him by one shoulder and with superhuman strength restrained him, preventing him from turning around, while with his other hand he rested the pistol on Leonard's neck and fired its drug content.

Leonard felt as if a surge of electricity ran through his entire body, paralyzing him and plunging him into a deep stupor, as his mind began to go numb, he could hear a shrill, synthetic voice say:

"The third cycle of Leonard 124 should have been interrupted before reaching its end, the individual discovered the operator ectasis room, I proceed to initiate the third cycle of Laila 124."

Far from the Sextant Lambda system, Earth was an arid and dead world, as were all the former colony worlds, extinct after hundreds of years. The war involved several factions of the galaxy, and led to the near-extinction of all humans, who now occupied a small and secluded sector, far from what was once their galactic domain, in which, still, some of the automated defense systems that once served for their defense, continue to operate, unaware that their former masters were no longer there, and serving as forgotten threats, waiting for unwary approaching their sensors, to be victims of the awakening of their dormant weapons.
