A Guide of Healthy Fruits and Vegetables

Hi everyone :)

I wrote about how do you store fruits and vegetables for keeping them fresh longer. We take the necessary substances such as vitamins and minerals through the foods that we consume so that our bodies can function properly; many of these are also hidden in fruits and vegetables.

How should fruits and vegetables be stored?

Sanitizing of fresh fruits and vegetables

  • Fruits and vegetables should be washed thoroughly with water. However, their surfaces should not be damaged.

  • After the first wash, if you keep vegetables and fruits in water with lemon or vinegar for 20 minutes, it provides good hygiene.

Storing fruits and vegetables fresh longer

  • We should keep all vegetables and fruits as a whole so that they do not lose the vitamins and minerals they contain, not by dividing them into pieces.

  • Leafy vegetables and fruits such as grapes and strawberries should be wrapped in a paper bag and stored in the fridge. Airtight containers are also an alternative method for long-term storage.

  • While storing vegetables and fruits, care should be taken not to contact metal.

  • Even vegetables and fruits that will be peeled should be thoroughly washed because, during the peeling process, toxic substances in the peel can contaminate the eaten part.

Cooking fruits and vegetables the healthiest way

  • The best method of cooking vegetables is to steam them. When vegetables cook with steam, they do not lose their vitamins and minerals in water and keep them in their essence.

  • Boiling the vegetables in a tightly closed pot also protects the vitamin value. However, the vegetables should be put into the pot when the water is about to boil, not when it is cold.

  • Uncooked and still tough-looking vegetables are more nutritious. As the cooking time gets longer, the rate of vitamin loss increases.

  • If the fruits are cooked in water, the time should be 5-10 minutes. If it is steamed, the time should be 20 minutes. The pressure cooker should not exceed almost 8 minutes.
