2 Things Not to Do to Your Eyes

in HEALTH REPUBLIC3 years ago

Hello everyone,

It is our fervent hope that we are all doing great and having an amazing time. As this happens to be the first post here, we would like to introduce the account briefly before we move on to our agenda for the day and hopefully look forward to more engagement in the days to come.

@bettervision is is a project initiated by @nattybongo and friends to give back to the society the knowledge and skill acquired through the Optometric Studies in Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana. It is an outreach system where we visit the less privileged communities to offer free eye screening services and education to the people within the community. We have been running for the past two years and have worked on projects with @adollaraday, @girlsfoundation and @fundition over these. We have decided to engage the community with some helpful eye tips for the benefit of all even as we continue to embark on our goal, we hope you find this useful.

Introduction

For our tips today we would be looking at first things we shouldn't do to our eyes or shouldn't do with our eyes which people may take for granted but may have serious repercussions on our ocular health and sight should thing go wrong.

1. Do not rub your eyes

This is probably one of the most common things an eye health practitioner would encounter in the field of work which many take for granted. Most people just rub their eyes when they feel any form of itch or uncomfortable feeling with the eye. When foreign objects fall on the eye too, they just rub with the hopes of it falling off.

The dangers of doing this the that one can easily damage the cornea (the black part of the eye we see when we look into a friends eye) if whatever that is on the eye rubs against it. The cornea is one of the most sensitive organs or tissues within the body and can be extremely painful when irritated. Again, damage exceeding the epithelium may just scar and impair your vision permanently and all this would be just be from just a simple rub.

In addition to this, the more we rub, we discolor our eyes, causes our vessels to engorge and result in red eyes. Instead of rubbing try opening the eye by holding your lashes when something falls on your eyes. If you eye is itching you can put a cold water on it, it bound to go down and then you can seek the necessary healthcare.

2. Avoid gazing directly at the sun or bright lights

People probably don't do this often however every now and then we get people do this out of curiosity especially our young ones. The believe is if we can explain to them the possible negative effects they would be discourage to keep doing these acts.

One of the things that can happen with this act is a burn of our retina depending on the light intensity. Our retina is responsible for the areas in space we see as this feeds directly to the brain, any part of it that we loss means we loss field of vision. There is also the possibility of damage to our macular which is the part of the eye for direct vision, imagine not been able to see what's directly ahead of you. UV from the sun is also know to cause cataract formation and accelerate development.

For individuals who may be working with bright light especially welders it is recommended to use the necessary eye protection. For general protection from the sun and bright lights your optometrist may recommend a photochromic lens or transition lenses to protect you from the effect of UV. Sunglasses with 100% UV protection may also do you good.

interesting post, most of us work in front of the computer, sometimes the hours pass, only when we feel discomfort in sight do we realize how long we have been.

Yes interesting fact, thanks for pointing out, rays from the computer can be injurious to our ocular health too and it’s know to be major cause of dry eye disease. It recommend to use the 15-15-15 rule or 20-20-20 rule for frequent computer users
