LA FIAMMA IN OGNUNO DI NOI

“E la candela alla cui luce aveva letto un libro pieno di ansie, di inganni, di dolore e di male, avvampò di una luce più vivida che mai, le illuminò tutto quello che prima era nell’oscurità, crepitò, cominciò ad offuscarsi e si spense per sempre”. ~ Anna Karenina, di Lev Tolstoj.

Quando lessi questa frase in Anna Karenina il mio pensiero si fermò, rimasi alcuni minuti inebriato dalla meraviglia di queste parole. Poi continuai a leggere quello che forse è uno dei libri più belli che abbia mai letto.

Ho un taccuino dove annoto le citazioni che più mi colpiscono nei libri che leggo. L’altra sera ero immerso nella lettura e nei ricordi impressi in quelle righe e mi sono soffermato, a distanza di un paio di anni, sulla frase che ho riportato sopra. Questa volta i miei pensieri si sono aggrovigliati soltanto su un aspetto: la candela.

O meglio, la fiamma della candela.

Fiamma, che per me, estendendo la bellissima metafora dello scrittore russo, rimanda all’essenza della vita stessa. Fiamma che può essere quella di una candela, quella di un fuoco acceso in mezzo al bosco, oppure ancora quella di un fiammifero. In qualunque accezione noi vogliamo intenderla, la fiamma è destinata a spegnersi. Così come la vita.

Ma guardiamola attentamente, questa fiamma. Quanto è bella?

Aah come splende! Per quanto possa essere effimera, la fiamma brucia, risplende, riscalda.

Che ci crediate o no, è in tutti noi. Quindi prendetela, accoglietela, diffondetela! Infiammate i vostri occhi, i vostri cuori, la vostra vita. Perché sì, utilizzando un’altra metafora di un cantautore a me caro, “la vita è una stella cadente, che illumina il cielo e poi sparisce”.

THE FLAME IN EACH OF US

"And the candle from which she had read a book full of anxieties, deceptions, pain and evil, blazed with a more vivid light than ever, illuminated everything that was before in the darkness, crackled, began to dim and spends forever ". ~ Anna Karenina, by Lev Tolstoy.

When I read this sentence in Anna Karenina my thought stopped, I remained a few minutes inebriated by the wonder of these words. Then I continued reading what is, perhaps, one of the best books I have ever read.

I have a notebook where I write down the quotes that strike me most in the books I read. The other evening I was immersed in reading and in the memories imprinted in those lines and I dwelt, after a couple of years, on the sentence I quoted above. This time, my thoughts got tangled in only one aspect: the candle.

Or rather, the flame of the candle.

Flame, which for me, extending the beautiful metaphor of the Russian writer, refers to the essence of life itself. Flame that can be that of a candle, that of a fire lit in the middle of the woods, or even that of a match. In whatever sense we want to understand it, the flame is destined to blow out. As well as life.

But let's look at it carefully, this flame. How beautiful is she?

Aah, how it shines! However ephemeral it may be, the flame burns, shines, warms.

Believe it or not, it is in all of us. So take it, welcome it, spread it! Ignite your eyes, your hearts, your life. Because yes, using another metaphor of a songwriter dear to me, "la vita è una stella cadente, che illumina il cielo e poi sparisce".
