Italy became a nation-state in 1861 when the regional states in present-day Italy, along with Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor Emmanuel II. The era of Parliamentary Government ended in the early 1920s when Benito Mussolini established a fascist dictatorial government. His alliance with Nazi Germany led to the defeat of Italy in World War II. The Democratic Republic replaced the royal system in 1946 and since then the Italian economy has been on the rise.

Italy is a founding member of NATO and the European Economic Community. Italy also played an active role in the process of European political and economic unification. The main problems facing Italy today include illegal immigrants, organized crime, high unemployment, and efforts to increase economic growth.

As a former Roman territory, cities in Italy, especially Rome, have many historical buildings and archaeological sites that attract foreign tourists. According to UNESCO records, Italy has 55 World Heritage Sites, making it the country that has the most UNESCO Cultural Heritage Sites (along with China).

The city of Rome is known as a city where the relics of the Roman Empire (27 BC-393 AD). Rome was founded in 753 BC. According to legend, Romulus and Remus, the twin sons of the God of War "Mars" floated on the river Tevere but survived. The two brothers were later raised by a wolf. In a fight, Romulus killed his twin brother Remus and later founded the Roma Quadrata on the river Tevere The current city of Rome is taken from the name of its founder, Romulus, who was the first king in Rome.

In the early days of its history, Rome or Rome was involved in various wars, which eventually could develop into a large empire covering almost all of mainland Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. This broad empire. Political functions were divided into provinces headed by governors.
