UNFORGETTABLE ITALY - Week 12 Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II @rosana6
Ciao, Italy community! I am happy to join the Unforgettable Italy contest created by @girolamomarotta in its 12th week. Some time ago, I had the blessing of going to the amazing city of Rome, and one of the places that I visited was the Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II, located between the Piazza Venezia and the Capitoline Hill.
On the second day of my trip, I set out on foot from the inn where I was staying, through beautiful streets of endless cobblestones and ancient monuments, passing by the ruins of the Ancient Market of Trajan, until I reached the famous Monument to the Father of the Fatherland, built in honor of Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of unified Italy. Upon arrival I noticed that from there I could see part of the city, specifically part of the ruins of the ancient Roman forum, and the Colosseum.
That day I learned that this great marble monument is also called Altare della Patria (Altar of the Fatherland), and I must say that I was impressed by its large dimensions and the beautiful sculptures and statues that adorned it. I also remember that La tomba del Milite Ignoto (the tomb of the unknown soldier) caught my attention; in it lie the mortal remains of a soldier killed in the war. Although his identity is not known for certain, the tomb symbolizes all Italians killed in several wars.
During that trip I noticed that Rome has a story to tell around every corner; it is a city full of many interesting and fascinating anecdotes. I can't wait to return to this unique Eternal City.
