I think you all are doing well. I am new to this group. I hope you will give me good support. Today I am going to talk to you about an important religious festival celebrated by Sri Lankans. That festival is Vesak.
Vesak is the most popular religious festival to Buddhists. It is held on May every year. It has three important events in the life of Lord Buddha. They are the birth, the Enlightenment and the passing away of Lord Buddha.
Some people observe "Sil" on this day. They participate to various religious activities. They listen to sermons and other religious talks. All these acts purify their thoughts. Houses are decorated with vesak lanterns and other decorations. They are also illuminated with coloured bulbs.
Thousands of devotees clad in white go on pilgrimages to important religious places. Pandals are ereted at public places. These pandals depict instance from the birth stories of Lord Buddha. They are illuminated with thousands of coloured.

Vesak is a very busy day for children. They make vesak lanterns in various shapes. There are vesak lantern competition too. The youth get together and organize "Dan Sals". This is give refreshments to weary sightseers. In the evening all families go to temple. They offer flowers and worship Lord Buddha. They also flash Joss sticks and light oil lamps. Their minds are filled with purified thoughts. Herds of cattle that are taken to slaughter houses are freed by certain buddhist arrangements. It is a great meritorious deed. Liquor shops are closed on this day.
Newspapers carry special supplements including articles on the importance of the vesak day. Sermons and other religious conversation are telecast through all the channels of the T.V.

People realise the consideration of leading a religious life on this day. They decide to give up all misdeeds done by them. They realise the vale of self-help too.
