Unforgettable Italy – The art of glass

Hi, friends from Italy.

Something that reminds me of Italy and makes this country unforgettable in my heart is the art, and particularly the art of stained glass.

I have met several stained glass artists in my country and I admire the stained glass windows that are in the churches. Gluing bits of glass together to make not just one figure but whole stories is fascinating.

In Italy there are many churches, of course! In all of them several renaissance artists or from other periods made works that I loved.

The stained glass artist also looks for the reflection of the colors on the walls or on the floor, and that is another fascination I have for this art since the artist not only works to make the figures but for the light to pass through his works.

The first photograph is a much known stained glass window found in the Cathedral of Siena, a monument that has been declared a World Heritage Site. It's the window above the main portal, in the dome, and is a recreation of the Last Supper of Jesus.

This second picture, is a very well known stained glass as it is in the Cathedral Santa Maria Maggiore (this Basilica is also included as a World Heritage Site).

As can be seen in this work is represented the Virgin Mary and child.

To visit the Cathedral Santa Maria Maggiore is to discover a jewel in Rome. I think that one of the places that can most impact a tourist. Its mosaics, its decoration, the medieval bell tower, its marble columns, the ceiling, etc., are many details that bring back good memories of my sightseeing tour in Rome.

This work is a marvel. It's science and it's art. It was made by Narcissus Quagliata, and is located in Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri. It's a cosmic stained glass window called "Divinity in Light".

Salvador Cuevas of Mexican nationality was the scientist (optical engineer) who came up with the ideas to incorporate prismatic lenses.

I don't know how to describe this stained glass window. It is a work that I have always liked because it integrates two thoughts that sometimes seem irreconcilable: the exact sciences (astronomy and mathematics), and divine belief. The result was a work of art.

I think the photograph looked great. Enjoy it!

I hope you like this tour through some stained glass windows in Italy.
