This huge sculpture of 1.75 meters in diameter which was dedicated to the god of the sea, was located in the Piazza della Bocca della Verità until 1632 when it was moved to the outside of one of the walls of the nearby Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, where it remains today, and it is common to see people lining up to take a picture next to it, of course, I was no exception.
Regarding the origin of the Boca della Verità, there are several historical theories about its purpose, one says that it could have been the lid of a drain of the Temple of Hercules Undefeated, which had an oculus similar to that of the Pantheon, another theory says that it could have been the lid of a drain for the blood in the sacrificial altar of the same temple.
Sincerely, many are the legends that circulate around this sculpture in which you can see a male face bearded with pierced nose, eyes and mouth, but the most relevant is the one that says that it possesses the virtue of showing when a woman has cheated on her husband and therefore, it is a real stone. Another of the legends surrounding this sculpture is that whoever lies, will lose their hand when they put it in the mouth.
