Unforgettable Italy Contest: Week 19 - The Colosseum @maitt87

Greetings dear friends of the Italy community! It is a pleasure for me to participate again in this contest created by friend @girolamomarotta, which allows us to share the splendor of this beautiful country through a photograph.

This photo I chose for this week was taken in 2010 on my trip to Italy and it is nothing more and nothing less than of the Roman Colosseum. I must say that it is a treat for the eyes to see such an imposing architectural structure emerging in the middle of the city, it is an indescribable feeling.

The Colosseum dates back to the time of the Roman Empire, it was built in the first century. Its name refers to the statue of the Colossus of Nero, although it is also known as the Flavian Amphitheater, since it was built during the Flavian dynasty and has a capacity for almost 65,000 spectators.

The Colosseum was the scene of gladiatorial combats, as well as theatrical plays, animal hunts and public executions. Recently, the Colosseum allowed its visitors access to its hypogeum, after a restoration that began in 2008. This place preserves some of its passages where there are still remains of the ramps that were used to transport gladiators and large animals to the arena.

In the surroundings of the Colosseum, towards the Palatine Hill, you can appreciate the Arch of Constantine, which commemorates the victory of Constantine I the Great in the battle of the Milvian Bridge. Just in front of it was built the Roman Forum, the ancient seat of the empire, where commerce, religion and justice were administered. Its ruins include buildings and monuments, such as: the Temples of Romulus, Saturn, Venus, Rome, Vespasian and Titus, the Arches of Septimius Severus and Titus, the ancient seat of the Senate, the Basilica of Maxentius and Constantine, among others.

Both photos are my own and were captured with a MaxiCam S-10 camera.
