Dear Steemians... Welcome To Sri Lanka - Let's visit Galle Fort

Galle fort is a fortification built by Portugese in the 16th century. But in the 17th century Dutch did a considerable modification to the Galle Fort, as a result this fort is also called Dutch Fort. This fort is located at the southern costal of Sri Lanka. This fort covers 90 hectares of land and most of the fort walls are facing the sea.

Number 1 : Ancient Clock Tower

This clock tower was created in the year of 1883 and it's 25m high. This clock tower is a popular landmark which symbolize Galle town and Galle fort.

Number 2 : National Museum of Galle

National Museum in Galle Fort is one of the significant museums in Sri Lanka which provides lot of information about last 5 centuries in Sri Lanka with British , Dutch and Portugese invaders. This building was created in 1656 and it is the oldest building in the Galle Fort which is belongs to Dutch architecture.

Number 3: Old Dutch Hospital, Galle

This hospital was created by Dutch for the medical purposes of Dutch East India Company officers. This is a two-storey building which reflect the 17 th century colonial Dutch architecture.

Number 4: Light House

The light house is 26.5m high and built with concrete by British in the year of 1939. This light house was designed by Alexander Gordon , a British architect. The light is controlled with the help of glass prism lens and mercury bath. Any ship entering the Galle Harbour is clearly visible to this point.

Number 5 : Ramparts of Galle Fort

If these ramparts and stone walls could talk, they could share the full history of this amazing place. The walls are very strong which are made of a coral-mixed cement built with natural ingredients and stones. You can walk on the outer walls of the Galle fort and complete round. While walking on walls you can watch Dutch Reform Church , Flag Rock , Star Bastion , Triton Bastion , Light house etc. It’s a 2.5 walk and I recommend you to walk in the afternoon, especially at sunset

If you love shopping , the inner streets of Galle fort should be a perfect place for you. There are around 100+ art galleries , textiles and handicrafts stores , gem stores , jewelry stores , herbal cosmetic product stores , spice stores , boutiques etc. And you are free to bargain and take products for a worthy price.

When you are inside the Galle Fort , you will feel like you are in old world. All the buildings belongs to 300-400 years old architectural designs but well maintained. Those buildings, stonewalls and ramparts , Dutch villas , antique shops and narrow streets will make you feel like you time traveled to few centuries back.
