Ci sono storie che coinvolgono o hanno coinvolto Cuba che alla
maggior parte della gente sono assolutamente sconosciute.
Essendo il vostro umile scriba un appassionato di storia capita di
imbattermi in racconti riguardanti la nostra isola su argomenti che
non conosco in modo assoluto.

Quello odierno parla della storia dimenticata dell'intervento
militare cubano durante la guerra dello Yom Kippur.
Nel 1973 Israele non era certo una grande potenza, mantenuto
mani e piedi dagli Usa e dalla potente ed influente lobby ebraica di
quel paese.
L'Egitto cercava una rivalsa dopo la sconfitta nella guerra del 1967, insieme alla Siria si lancio' in questa nuova guerra che fu anche il primo conflitto Cubano-Israeliano.
E' forse per questa ragione che Tel Aviv, ogni anno, vota al fianco
degli Usa contro la risoluzione Onu che chiede la fine dell'odioso
bloqueo.

I cubani furono schierati al fianco delle truppe siriane sull'altura
del Golan nel ottobre 1973.
Parliamo di un contingente di 4000 uomini, che parteciparono sia
agli scontri terrestri che alle battaglie nei cieli grazie al possesso dimezzi militari forniti, come gia' accadde in Angola, dall'UNione
Sovietica.
Parliamo sia di carri armati che di elicotteri.

Questo intervento se pur importante oltre che sconosciuto non impedi' alla controffensiva di Israele di respingere gli aggressori e di tornare allo status quo di prima della guerra.
I cubani registrarono molte perdite vista anche la loro presenza in
prima linea durante i combattimenti, del resto i sovietici li avevano mandati li' proprio per quello.
Si parla di 180 morti e di 250 feriti.

Se e' vero che l'asse Sirio-Egiziano non centro' l'obiettivo militare di recuperare le terre perdute nel 1967, l'assalto a sorpresa e l'intervento diplomatico delle due grandi potenze finirono con indebolire lo stato ebraico.
Al termine del conflitto caddero politicamente le 3 figure piu' importanti del paese; la premier Golda Meir, il ministro della difesa Moshe Dayan ed il capo di stato maggiore David Elazar.

L'intervento di Cuba al fianco delle forze arabe accredito' l'isola
presso l'opinione pubblica di quei paesi e non solo come un paese
amico, tanto che a breve furono inviati altri consiglieri e combattenti in Somalia e Yemen creando di fatto un asse con Libia ed Algeria per l'indipendenza del Sahara orientale.
Cuba era definitivamente penetrata nella regione.

Questo intervento ebbe anche conseguenze economiche di rilievo
per l'isola; Algeria, Egitto e Libia iniziarono a fornire carburante,
prodotti agricoli e carichi umanitari oltre a garantire un appoggio
diplomatico in sede internazionale.
Coi libici poi ci fu una sorta di autentico baratto; petrolio per
intelligence oltre che aiuti allo sviluppo logistico.

E' cosa nota come Gheddafi voleva stabilire un avamposto nelle
americhe e Fidel era la persona giusta per aiutarlo.
Non a caso nel 1990, insieme, tentarono il primo golpe islamista
nel continente americano, a Trinidad e Tobago.
Ma questa e' un'altra storia.

THE KIPPUR WAR

There are stories involving or involving Cuba that the
most people are absolutely unknown.
Being your humble scribe a history buff happens to
come across stories about our island on topics that
I don't know at all.

Today's is about the forgotten history of surgery
Cuban military during the Yom Kippur War.
In 1973, Israel was hardly a major power, maintained
hands and feet from the USA and from the powerful and influential Jewish lobby of
that country.
Egypt was looking for revenge after the defeat in the 1967 war, together with Syria it launched into this new war which was also the first Cuban-Israeli conflict.
It is perhaps for this reason that Tel Aviv votes alongside each year
of the USA against the UN resolution which calls for an end to the odious
blocked.

The Cubans were deployed alongside the Syrian troops on the high ground
of the Golan in October 1973.
We speak of a contingent of 4000 men, who attended both
to land clashes and to battles in the skies thanks to the possession of military means supplied, as already happened in Angola, by the Union
Soviet.
We are talking about both tanks and helicopters.

This intervention, while important as well as unknown, did not prevent Israel's counter-offensive from repelling the aggressors and returning to the pre-war status quo.
The Cubans recorded many losses also due to their presence in
front line during the fighting, after all the Soviets had sent them there for that.
There is talk of 180 dead and 250 injured.

If it is true that the Syrian-Egyptian axis did not achieve the military objective of recovering the lands lost in 1967, the surprise attack and the diplomatic intervention of the two great powers ended up weakening the Jewish state.
At the end of the conflict the 3 most important figures of the country fell politically; Prime Minister Golda Meir, Defense Minister Moshe Dayan and Chief of Staff David Elazar.

Cuba's intervention alongside Arab forces credited the island
in the public opinion of those countries and not just as a country
friend, so much so that other advisers and fighters were soon sent to Somalia and Yemen, effectively creating an axis with Libya and Algeria for the independence of Eastern Sahara.
Cuba had definitely penetrated the region.

This intervention also had important economic consequences
for the island; Algeria, Egypt and Libya began supplying fuel,
agricultural products and humanitarian cargo as well as guaranteeing support
international diplomat.
With the Libyans then there was a sort of authentic barter; oil for
intelligence as well as aid to logistical development.

It is known that Gaddafi wanted to establish an outpost in the
Americas and Fidel was the right person to help him.
It is no coincidence that in 1990, together, they attempted the first Islamist coup
in the American continent, in Trinidad and Tobago.
