Mijain Lopez, il gigantesco Campione cubano di lotta greco romana, dopo aver vinto il quinto oro consecutivo in 5 Olimpiadi differenti, con un gesto iconico e plateale si e tolto le scarpette al centro del tappeto di combattimento di Parigi annunciando a Cuba e al mondo, a 42 anni, il ritiro dalle scene sportive.
E' stato campione olimpico a Pechino 2008, Londra 2012, Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020 e Parigi 2024, aveva partecipato senza medaglie anche ad Atene 2004.
A questo palmares vanno aggiunti un numero impressionante di mondiali vinti, giochi panamericani, gran gala ed altre gare di altissimo livello.
Una assoluta leggenda.

Con il suo ritiro, quello della Judoka Idalis Ortiz, la sconfitta del 2 volte medaglia olimpica nel pugilato di La Cruz si chiude un era per lo sport dell'isola.

Ricordiamo il leggendario pugile Teofilo Stevenson che rinuncio' ad una borsa enorme offerta da Don King per affrontare Cassius Clay perche' l'amore dei cubani valeva piu' di ogni cifra.

Oggi i giovani atleti sono consapevoli che la carriera sportiva dura poco e che l'isola non e' in grado di garantire loro un compenso adeguato e soprattutto un dopo carriera che sia economicamente appagante.
La matrice ideologica non ha piu' la presa di un tempo, gli atleti che intravvedono una possibilita' di guadagno se ne vanno a gareggiare sotto altre bandiere.

Il cubano che gareggia per il Cile e che e' stato sconfitto in finale da Lopez prendera' 43 mila dollari dalla propria federazione per aver portato a casa un argento olimpico, quanto portera' a casa Lopez ammesso che porti a casa qualcosa?
Finisce un'epoca gloriosa per lo sport cubano, quella nuova che si sta' affacciando sembra meno luccicante, oggi la sola cosa che pare conti e' che a luccicare sia il conto corrente.
