The Capitoline Museums in Rome were founded in the late fifteenth century and offer a very complex picture of the art and archeology of the Roman Empire. The museums are located in two palaces that were designed by Michelangelo.

Located in Piazza del Campidoglio right on top of the Capitoline Hill from which they got their name, the Capitoline Museums are a tourist attraction not to be missed by any tourist who is somewhat attracted to the history of Ancient Rome and wants to see at least a few one of the most precious treasures of this city.

The museums are hosted by two palaces facing each other: Palazzo dei Conservatori - Palace of Conservators and Palazzo Nuovo - New Palace. They were designed by Michelangelo Buonarroti in 1536 and built over more than a hundred years. The museums are connected by an underground tunnel that also connects with the old Tabularium.

The tabular was the official archive of Ancient Rome and also the place where many of the city's high officials had their offices. In the Tabularium were kept the bronze tablets containing the laws and official documents of the Roman State from the late Republican Era. In antiquity, this building is located in the Roman Forum, on the slope of Capitoline Hill just below the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus.

History of the Capitoline Museums

The history of the Capitoline Museums takes us back in time to the year 1471 when Pope Sixtus IV began donating various bronze pieces and entire collections to the city. They were placed near the Conservatory Palace so that they could be admired by the general public.

Later this collection was moved inside the building along with other archaeological discoveries. Around 1650 the Palazzo Nuovo was completed and the collections were extended to the second building. Nowadays the museums are owned by the city of Rome.
