I saw on CNN a good show about Facebook, about network problems with moderating harmful content and what could be done to change that. Frances Haugen, who worked at Facebook before becoming a whistleblower, making some incriminating reports for the company, said in front of a commission of inquiry a very true thing: Facebook sees online safety as a cost center, not as a growth opportunity.

In other words, Facebook needs to realize that investing in security and moderation will attract new users to the platform. Or it will bring back those who gradually abandon it.

Instead, Facebook announces that it will hire 10,000 engineers to develop the metaverse. It could be the biggest and most expensive flop in history. An even more interesting statement was made by a guest on CNN, a media researcher at the University of Virginia. He said Facebook cannot be controlled or modified.

Reason: There is no background in this area. There has never been a social network or television or institution with 3 billion users speaking 100 different languages and with such a wide variety of social problems.

No one knows what action Facebook should take. Nobody knows what to ask of them, beyond "make it better", and especially the politicians who decide such things are on the subject anyway. It is the first time that human civilization has such a problem.

Finally, given that only Facebook has access to data and statistics anyway, you can only hope that they will find a way to fix themselves, to become a better, friendlier place for everyone. But now we come back to the words of the whistleblower: Facebook does not see content moderation as an opportunity for growth, but as a cost, lost money..

I think that, on the other side of the barricade, even different countries could take action. If a state decides that Facebook as a whole is doing more harm than good to its citizens, it could block it altogether. But that will never happen. Too many communities depend on Facebook, too many businesses, too many people for whom the network does good, not bad. Such a measure is specific only to dictatorships.

There really is no easy way to solve this modern problem that affects many societies. And leaving Facebook is not a solution. Few people are actually aware of Facebook's problems, so maybe they've already given them slippers. Most are still there and are suffering from the bad influence, and the results can be seen around us.

Zuckerberg said Facebook has 15,000 moderators who check 3 million messages a day in 70 languages. Not enough from a $ 9.2 billion quarterly profit company.

Metaverso sarà sicuramente un flop...ma non ho capito se sarà una cosa che va a sostituire del tutto Facebook oppure un altro social
