A new short animated film made by Greenpeace exposes the truth about intensive animal husbandry and highlights the devastating relationship between the global meat industry and the destruction of the rainforest. The new environmental hero portrayed in the NGO's animation is Jag-Wah. It is a continuation of the popular 2018 Rang-Tan video, which told the story of the impact of palm oil production on the rainforest in Indonesia. The 90-second film created a sensation on the internet after it was banned from being broadcast on TV screens in Great Britain, being considered too political. But banning the video only amplified the message, given that palm oil still remains an important position on the environmental agenda. Although palm oil produced in a sustainable way remains a noble cause, the latest data show that palm oil production is responsible for only 10% of the European Union's footprint on deforestation. Almost half of this footprint can be attributed to soy imports. Therefore, soybean production is directly responsible for almost five times more deforestation than palm oil. The vast majority of soybean imports into the UK are in the form of flour, mainly for animal feed.

There's a monster in my kitchen, I don't know what to do

To meet the huge demand for soybeans in the United Kingdom alone, 1.5 million hectares of land are needed, a larger area than Northern Ireland. More than 70% of imports come from South America, where extensive soybean cultivation leads to deforestation, species extinction and forest fires. The new animation of Greenpeace also comes in response to the new analysis of the latest fires carried out by the National Space Research Institute of Brazil, which suggests that this year
burned an area equivalent to the size of Great Britain. This is where the new hero, Jag-Wah, enters the scene. In the introductory sequence of the film, a child looks for a snack in the fridge in the middle of the night, when the Jag-Wah monster appears with an important message about food choices and the destruction of forests. Dramatically, the hero is portrayed as the monster in the kitchen, but the message is quickly overturned when the narration of the character begins.

THERE'S A MONSTER IN MY FOREST, I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. HE TURNED MY HOUSE IN ASH, TO GROW SOMETHING NEW IN ITS PLACE. FOOD FOR CHICKENS, PIGS AND COWS, TO SELL YOU MORE. AS OUR FOREST DISAPPEARED, THEIR EVIL EMPIRE GROWN. THEY THINK THEY ARE STOPPED, BUT WE HOPE IT'S NOT TRUE. WOULD EVERYONE KNOW THE REAL COST OF WHAT HE DOES…

IF YOU WANT TO TAKE A LOOK

Huge areas of rainforest are being destroyed every day for grazing cattle and soybean plantations to feed farm animals. Although this article focuses on soybean production, it should be noted that cattle breeding is considered responsible for 80% of deforestation. Habitat destruction leads to a lot of environmental and societal problems. The most important topic is climate emergency. Changes in the natural environment, mainly caused by human interaction, have significant, most likely irreversible, consequences for the climate. Biodiversity-rich natural environments, such as the Amazon rainforest, absorb carbon dioxide from the air and help normalize global temperatures.

But we will soon reach the tipping point where the Amazon rainforest will no longer generate enough rain to sustain itself. In this bleak future, billions of tons of carbon will be released into the atmosphere, causing unimaginable problems around the globe.

The rights of indigenous communities are also constantly under threat. The natives are exposed both to the risk of losing their homes, to the violence of breeders and those who cut down the forest illegally, but also to the risk of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The fact that Greenpeace chose to give the new hero, Jag-Wah, the appearance of a jaguar is not a coincidence. It should be noted that this is one of the species most affected by forest fires. At least 600 jaguars out of an estimated population of 2,000 in the Pantanal region have been endangered. Overwhelming images of the area affected by the fires show an environment in which life has been decimated

The solution, a billion small

OH, JAG-WAH IN MY KITCHEN, NOW I KNOW WHAT I NEED TO DO. WE WILL EAT MORE PLANTS AND VEGETABLES AND EXCHANGE MEAT WITH VEGETABLE STEW! WE WILL STOP THESE KILLING MONSTERS SO THAT OUR PLANET CAN BE RENAISSED.

IF YOU WANT TO TAKE A LOOK

The meat industry is one of the key factors destroying this crucial environment, but it must not remain so. Every time we sit at the table, we have the power to decide what the future will look like. The cumulative effect of the billions of seemingly small choices has greater power and potential than these industry giants.
