I Love Italy: MONTAGNANA!!PADUA/ITALY
Montagnana is a small jewel in the province of Padua. This town is part of the club of "The most beautiful villages in Italy", and as soon as you cross its walls it is not difficult to understand why: its historic center is completely surrounded by a wall almost two kilometers long, which it is well preserved over time.
The structure of the city, an extraordinary example of a walled center, still well preserved, can already be perceived from the outside, with a short turn of the pits in an anticlockwise direction: the curtain wall of about 2 kilometers, with an irregular rectangular shape, crowned by battlements of type Guelph and interspersed with 24 semi-hexagonal towers, it is surrounded by an embankment with a moat, with two original entrances open towards the east towards Padua and towards the west towards Legnago. The walking tour starts from the southwest side of the walls, near the Porta XX Settembre, opened in 1885 by Camillo Boito. Continue to the left on the embankment outside the enclosure, until you descend into the valley at the western corner tower, and, after passing the moat, you reach the ring road. Going to the right, you will soon find yourself in front of Porta Legnago, dominated by the Carrara complex of the Rocca degli Alberi. Built between 1360 and 1362, it represents one of the most important and best preserved examples of medieval military architecture, consisting of a keep about 35 meters high, a keep facing the city and a door divided into three reduced, preceded by a ravelin in the wall. Upon entering the city, take the arcaded via Matteotti, the ancient via Granda, the central axis of the town, from which a short digression to the left on via N. Sauro leads to the eighteenth-century Church of S. Benedetto, while a little further on , always from the central street, take via dei Montagnana on the right, to skirt the archivolts of the wall in via Mure Sud to the left and reach the back of the fifteenth-century Church of S. Francesco. Leave the walls behind, take the street that follows the side of the building, to come out in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, from where you take Via Carrarese, in view of the mighty Castel S. Zeno, with Porta Padova. The complex is divided into 3 parts: the Ezzelino keep, the door with 2 ravelins and the Ezzelinian fortress, with 2 corner towers placed diagonally, from where the first wall built in the mid-thirteenth century with only bricks begins. Leaving the door, note the Palazzo Pisani, designed by Palladio. Crossing the wall, you return from the pusterla di S. Zeno, which leads to Piazza Trieste, from which you can quickly reach the central square through Via Marconi, where the imposing Duomo overlooks, with important paintings inside. Via Roma leads to Porta Vicenza, opened in 1504 to connect the city to the Frassine river and to Vicenza. Exiting to the right, it is advisable to conclude the visit by skirting the north-east quadrant of the walls, until returning to Castel San Zeno.
