The Glems, a small lake around Leonberg
The Glems, a small lake around Leonberg

Hey travelers,

welcome to my Sunday's hiking tour around the Glemstal - Glems valley. The Glems is a small river that rises in a Stuttgart nature reserve and from there meanders through the Madental valley to Leonberg, Höfingen and further. There is a circular route through the valley from Leonberg to Höfingen and over fields back to Leonberg, this is my hiking tour today with a length of about 12km.

The Glems valley is surrounded on one side by steep limestone cliffs, on the other side there are green overgrown hills, and the local train also runs through the Glems valley.

There is also a lot of art and historical buildings to be seen in the Glems valley. Around 25 historic mills can be seen along the course of the Glems, four in the Glemstal near Leonberg.

Mills on the Enz tributary, the Glems, have been built in many places over the centuries; the first documented mentions date from the 12th century. Originally they were powered by water wheels, which were largely replaced by turbines in the early 20th century.

Some of the flour mills are still running today, while others were converted into homes or completely demolished in the 20th century. In some places, flour is still milled from grain from the region according to an old tradition. Often the visitor can shop in an associated shop or take part in a tour by appointment.

In recent years, some of the Glems mills have participated in regional projects, for example in September 2004 on the Open Monument Day or in July 2009 in the “The Waters of the Neckar” project in the Stuttgart region. On these days, cultural events took place in the rooms of the mills involved and guided tours were offered.

In the Glemstal you can find works of art by local artists, works of art carved out of stone, wall paintings or wood carvings. It is not only a nature experience but also a cultural, refreshing one for the soul and spirit.
