No, the title is not a joke, there is a beach population in the state of Pernambuco, northeast of Brazil, which really has chickens everywhere, honoring its name: Porto de Galinhas (Chicken Port).

Ok, most of the chickens are not real, in the tourist part of the city the decorative ones predominate, but anyway, they also star in the landscape.

This sculpture made me immediately hum that famous song of the sixties: Surfer Bird

The "jangadas" waiting for tourists

The reason for this particular name has to do with the slave trade that took place in Brazil during the 19th century. When slavery was banned and subsequently abolished, unfortunately ships continued to arrive at this port with slaves hidden in cages where chickens were transported. So this bird is now a kind of icon of the place and is seen in sculptures, showcases and all kinds of souvenirs.

Not even the telephone booths are saved from being adorned with a chicken

The colorful chickens swarm around the city center

Porto de Galinhas, located about 70 km from Recife, capital of Pernambuco, has as its main attraction its beach with many palm trees and beautiful natural pools that form about 100 meters from the shore when the tide drops. There many people work offering rides in rafts (wooden boats with sail) to tourists.

There are protected beach areas because the turtles arrive to lay their eggs

The waters are very clear and with any diving mask you can observe the varied and colorful marine fauna of the place.

Another pleasant activity in Porto is to walk along its long beaches. One of them is Maracaípe, which also has a river that adds beauty to its peaceful landscape. The winds of this beach are also suitable for windsurfers and kitesurfers.

The city of Porto de Galinhas, although small, has many tourist accommodations, restaurants and fun for visitors. Their nights are very lively, with many places to listen to live music, have a drink and dance.

The coco-dumps, very original

The offer of nightlife in Porto de Galinhas is very varied

Tapioca (a kind of cassava flour tortilla) and Waffle (or something like that), both stuffed with cheese

And finally: the recipe of this famous Brazilian drink: Caipirinha

Here the poster translation:

HOW TO MAKE A GOOD CAIPIRINHA!

2 teaspoons of sugar

1 lemon, ice, cachaça (typical Brazilian liquor)

Cut the lemon into slices, put in the bottom of the glass with sugar, kneading gently

Add ice, cachaça, stir sensually and feel in Brazil!
