Deep within the southern side of the Low Tatras lies a hidden gem that has fascinated people for centuries - Bystrianska jaskyňa. This captivating cave beckons adventurers to explore its mysterious depths and discover the wonders concealed within.

Bystrianska jaskyňa, also known as Bystrá Cave, is a national cultural monument that offers visitors a glimpse into the mesmerizing world of stalactites and stalagmites. Nestled amidst the cave-rich Horchronské podolie area, this natural wonder has attracted generations of curious individuals seeking to unravel its secrets.

Unveiling Secrets: Exploring the Cave's History

For hundreds of years, people pondered what lay behind the enigmatic hole in the rock at Bystrianska jaskyňa. It wasn't until 100 years ago that two brave men, Josef Kovalčik and E. Laubert, armed with candles and torches, ventured inside this subterranean realm. In secret, they meticulously explored and researched its hidden treasures.

In 1926, their endeavors led them to discover Peklo (Hell), an opening that revealed a new and larger section of the cave. However, it wasn't until 1932 that another secret was unveiled - a hidden direct entrance leading further into this underground labyrinth.

Over time, Bystrianska jaskyňa evolved from being shrouded in mystery to becoming an underground attraction for visitors from near and far. In 1939–40, it was opened to tourists for the first time; however, electric lighting had not yet been installed in those early days.

A Journey Through Time: From Darkness to Light

Today's visitors are greeted by a well-developed reception building at Bystrianska jaskyňa, complete with a kiosk and benches for resting. As you step inside, you can't help but feel the weight of history that permeates the air. This cave played a significant role during the final days of World War II when it became a refuge for residents from nearby towns seeking shelter from the German Wehrmacht.

The brave individuals who sought solace in these gloomy depths survived for an astonishing 21 days at a depth of 40 meters until liberation finally arrived. A plaque in Zrútený dóm (Fallen Cathedral) now stands as a testament to one of the victims who tragically lost their life during their delayed escape.

There is always a light at the end of the tunnel

Since its discovery by Jozef Kovalšik and his companion, Bystrianska jaskyňa has developed a 580-meter-long sightseeing route, allowing visitors to marvel at its wonders. However, this is just a small fraction of what lies beneath the surface; this expansive cave system stretches over three kilometers underground.

Slovakia is a country of caves

As you venture deeper into Bystrianska jaskyňa, be prepared for an atmospheric journey through time. The temperature remains constant throughout the year, fluctuating between approximately 5.7°C and 7°C. The high relative humidity adds to the mystical ambiance that envelops every corner of this subterranean realm.

Remember to adhere to strict rules while exploring this natural wonder - touching or damaging any karst decoration is strictly forbidden. Additionally, photography and filming are only permitted after payment due to conservation efforts and ensuring compliance with regulations.

Marvels of Nature: The Stalactites and Stalagmites

As we venture further into the depths of Bystrianska jaskyňa, prepare to be awestruck by the mesmerizing display of stalactites and stalagmites that adorn the cave's walls. These natural formations are a testament to the incredible power and beauty of nature's artistic touch.

The stalactites, which hang from the ceiling like delicate icicles, are formed as mineral-rich water drips slowly over time, leaving behind deposits of calcium carbonate. Each droplet adds another layer to these stunning formations, causing them to grow longer and more intricate with each passing year.

On the other hand, stalagmites rise from the cave floor towards the ceiling. They form as mineralized water drips onto the ground below and gradually builds up over time. When these two meet, they create magnificent columns known as stalagnates or cave columns.

What makes Bystrianska jaskyňa truly special is not just its abundance of stalactites and stalagmites but also their remarkable diversity in shape and size. As you explore deeper into this underground wonderland, you'll encounter an array of fantastic forms that will leave you in awe.

Some resemble towering pillars reminiscent of ancient temples while others take on whimsical shapes that spark your imagination. It's no wonder that one particular formation has earned itself a fitting name - "The Great Pagoda." Standing tall with grandeur, it evokes images of a mystical Eastern temple hidden within the depths of this subterranean realm.

Adjacent to "The Great Pagoda" is another marvel called Canopy Hall (Sleñ baldachynov). Here lies an abyss filled with flowing water that plunges 20 meters deep beneath a majestic canopy-like structure. Remarkably, this water takes exactly 116 hours to resurface at Tajch karst spring, located four kilometers away in the village of Valaská. Nature's intricate connections never cease to amaze.

Speleotherapy: Healing in the Depths

Bystrianska jaskyňa not only offers a visual feast for the senses but also provides a unique opportunity for healing and rejuvenation. Since 1971, speleotherapy has been conducted in the Liečebný dóm (Sanatorium) outside of the show cave area.

Speleotherapy is a form of treatment that utilizes the therapeutic properties found within caves. It has been discovered that spending time in these underground environments can have positive effects on respiratory conditions. The air within Bystrianska jaskyňa's deepest section, known as Peklo (Hell), is thick and moist, creating an atmosphere conducive to healing.

Patients who partake in speleotherapy sessions here find solace amidst this subterranean sanctuary. The combination of stable temperature, high humidity, and clean air helps to alleviate respiratory ailments such as asthma and bronchitis. In secluded areas inaccessible to tourists, you'll find a few invertebrates that have evolved to thrive in this specialized habitat. One notable example is the giant springtail, a crustacean rarely seen elsewhere due to its preference for seclusion.
