Slovakia is a unknown, but a true hiker's paradise, with its stunning mountain scenery, lush forests, and abundant wildlife - all near Brno, the beautiful town of Czech. The Low Tatras, the second-highest mountain range in the country, offer a variety of hiking trails for all levels of experience, from easy walks to challenging climbs.

This is the way to the next peak

One of the most popular hiking trails in the Low Tatras is the ridge walk from Chopok to Ďumbier, the highest mountain in the range. The trail begins at the Chopok summit, which can be reached by cable car or on foot. From Chopok, the trail follows the ridge line, passing through meadows, forests, and rocky outcrops. The views from the ridge are simply breathtaking, with panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Starting Point and Parking Lot for the Ridge Hike

To begin our thrilling adventure in the Lower Tatra Mountains, we need to make our way to the starting point of the ridge hike. The Biela Pút valley station in Demänovská Dolina serves as an excellent starting point, easily accessible by car or motorhome. As you drive along the road leading up there, you'll come across a large parking lot on your left. You can walk by feet from here, but keep in mind: It needs two or three hours to the summit - where the hike starts!

You don't have to hike all the way up

During our visit, we were fortunate enough to find free parking at this location, because the season was over. However, please note that there may be a barrier during winter when it's high skiing season. Make sure to check if any parking fees apply during your visit.

Once parked, you'll find yourself at the starting point of this exciting journey through nature's wonders. Now let's explore how we can reach Chopok Mountain itself!

Cable Car or Human Power - How to Reach Chopok?

When it comes to reaching Chopok Mountain, adventurers have two options: taking the cable car or embarking on a challenging climb using their own human power. We don't do that.

"Sedlo" means "the saddle"

For those seeking convenience and breathtaking aerial views along the way like we do, hopping aboard the cable car is an ideal choice. The journey begins with a chairlift ride followed by a funicular and finally a gondola ride that takes you all the way up to the summit of Chopok Mountain. The ticket price for this mountain journey is 16 euros per person.

If you're more inclined towards testing your physical endurance and immersing yourself fully in nature's embrace, then climbing up to Chopok Mountain on foot is an exhilarating option worth considering. This route takes approximately two hours but may vary depending on individual pace and breaks taken for filming or photography sessions. Remark: The way on the hills are adding another two or three hours, And to go down again you will need two or three another hours more.

At the ticket counters for the cable car, you'll find a handy brochure listing various hikes with distances and estimated times. It's highly recommended to grab one of these brochures before setting off, as it will serve as a valuable guide throughout your journey. My tipp: add some time to the time the wrote. It's a slovakian thing to hike like runners.

During our hike, we followed the 2a route and continued on to the 4er until reaching the Luková middle station. From there, an unmarked path led us up to Chopok Mountain - we are seeing this from above and we're thank got not to choose to walk the way. On our return journey, we don't retraced our steps along the ridge using the 2er trail back to the parking lot. We're going the other way, this one the traditional cargo and wood lifters use - famous and crazy guys called The Slovakian Sherpas.

Hike to Chopok - Route and Highlights

Now that we've reached the starting point and decided on our preferred mode of transportation, it's time to delve into the exciting details of the hike to Chopok Mountain. Strap on your hiking boots, grab your camera, and let's hit the trail!

Better you know your way by yourself

From the cable car station above, continue walking along the path until you spot a blue hiking trail branching off to the left. This is where our adventure truly begins. The sign along the way indicates that it will take approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes to reach Chopok Mountain. Brace yourself for a continuous uphill climb as you ascend around 900 meters in altitude.

As we make our way up, we find ourselves traversing a ski slope. The path may be challenging at times but fear not; every step brings us closer to breathtaking views and unforgettable experiences. Take your time, pause whenever needed, and soak in the beauty surrounding you.

The only place crowded

Unlike its sister range, the High Tatras located opposite in the north which caters more towards climbers, this region of Lower Tatra Mountains offers classic mountain hikes with stunning peaks reaching over two thousand meters above sea level. One particularly remarkable route is from Chopok Mountain to Ďumbier - the highest peak in these mountains.

Double cross on the peak

The path from Chopok leads us onwards towards Ďumbier after descending from its rocky summit near Kamenná chata (stone cottage). As we venture forth on this less-traveled trail, encounters with other hikers become sporadic. The well-maintained path gently slopes eastward just below Konské summit at an elevation of 1.756 meters.

Throughout this section of our journey, prepare yourself for occasional crossings over scree fields while marveling at how expertly laid out and reminiscent of ancient Roman roads this path feels! It's truly impressive what Alpine clubs have achieved here.

It's up on the cabin "Chata Generala"

After reaching Demanovské Sedlo, a saddle between peaks, we face the final ascent of around three hundred meters to Ďumbier. Keep in mind that the summit may appear deceptively close at times due to the undulating terrain. As we crest each ridge and descend into another saddle, such as Krupovo Sedlo, we inch closer to our ultimate destination.

Finally, after a little over two hours of hiking from Chopok Mountain, we stand triumphantly atop Ďumbier - the highest peak in the Low Tatras. Here, you'll be greeted by an awe-inspiring patriarchal cross that holds significance not only for its presence on this summit but also as an emblem featured in Slovakia's national coat of arms. The wind is blowing hard and we can see snow under our feets - in the last days of summer.

Descending from Ďumbier - Scenic Routes Back

Having conquered the majestic heights of Ďumbier, it's time to begin our descent back towards our starting point. But don't worry; this journey is far from mundane! Prepare yourself for scenic routes and captivating landscapes along the way.

Round view

From Krupovo Sedlo (saddle), follow your footsteps back along the same path used during your ascent until you reach Chata Štefánika - a mountain hut nestled amidst nature's splendor. Approximately halfway between Chata Štefánika and your starting point lies a green-marked hiking trail branching off towards the west.

This picturesque trail gently descends with occasional counter climbs as it guides you through enchanting vistas and natural wonders. Take your time to appreciate every step while capturing memorable photographs or simply immersing yourself in tranquility.

A fog is coming

As you near completion of this section of your hike, prepare for approximately 300 meters of altitude loss leading you back to the middle station of Chopok cable car. The final stretch takes us across ski slopes which might not be visually appealing but serve as a reminder that our adventure is coming full circle.

As we conclude our exhilarating journey through the Lower Tatra Mountains, let's take a moment to discover the wonders of Liptov, a region that serves as a gateway to even more thrilling adventures. Situated in the northern part of Slovakia, Liptov offers something for every season and caters to all types of travelers.

Look in the middle: Hikers for us

In winter, this region transforms into a winter sports paradise with extended ski tours and opportunities for snowboarding and skiing. The most popular ski center in Slovakia, Jasna, is located here in the southern part of Liptov. Whether you're an experienced skier or just starting out on the slopes, Jasna has something for everyone.

But Liptov isn't just about winter sports. In springtime, nature awakens with vibrant colors and beckons hikers and nature lovers alike. Explore picturesque mountain trails that lead you through lush forests, meandering rivers, and stunning valleys. Capture breathtaking photographs as you immerse yourself in the beauty of this enchanting landscape.

One highlight not to be missed is exploring one of the longest cave systems in the world located directly from the valley. While only three caves are open to the public (including an ice cave), they offer a glimpse into an underground world filled with natural wonders.

More stones and more moss

Liptov also boasts idyllic villages that showcase traditional Slovakian folk architecture. These charming settlements have been recognized by UNESCO for their cultural significance and provide visitors with an opportunity to immerse themselves in local traditions and customs.

To reach Liptov, you can fly into Bratislava, Kosice or Poprad airports before taking express trains to Liptovsky Mikulas - known as Liptau-St.Nikolaus - or opt for a scenic road trip via Vienna or Zilina if traveling by car.
