As I embarked on my journey through the picturesque landscapes of Popradske pleso in the Tatra Mountains, little did I know that a somber and thought-provoking experience awaited me. The leisurely tour around the shimmering mountain lake came to an unexpected pause as a dark shadow fell upon the path. A cross, a sign. This was the entrance to the symbolic mountaineers' cemetery.
The path is made of stones
Just a few meters over a small bridge, under which the water murmurs quietly, lies this sacred ground. Nestled on a mountain slope and shaded by Swiss stone pines, it serves as a poignant reminder of all those who lost their lives in these majestic mountains.

The origins of this symbolic cemetery can be traced back to 1930 when Czech painter Otakar Štáfl conceived the idea of creating a place where memorial plaques from various accident sites could be consolidated for remembrance. With his wife and some friends, he began laying out what would become known as Popradske pleso's symbolic mountaineers' cemetery in 1936.
Plates for the victims
Woodcarver Jozef Fekiač-Šumný from Detva crafted 60 colored wooden crosses for this hallowed ground while local companies contributed to building a small chapel. The cemetery was officially opened on August 11, 1940, with its first plaque dedicated to Hungarian mountaineer Jenő Wachter who tragically fell during an expedition in 1907.

Underneath its Slovakian coat of arms at the entrance stands a stone block bearing the motto "To the known and unknown victims of High Tatras." Since then, it has been recognized as a national cultural monument since 1970 and is now cared for by the administration of Tatra National Park.
