Stone Guardians

Today we will talk about Beoksu (벅수)

Beoksu are different stone guardian statues of different shapes which can be still found all around Korea. Most of them are very old and are listed as a National Heritage of Korea.

In the ancient time, Korean people believed in demons and evil. Therefore, there are a lot of different figures, accessories, symbols, etc which suppose to protect people from evil spirit. And of the most common thing is a stone statue.

People put stone guardians in front of the houses. Also, Beoksu statues can be found in royal tombs. People believe that there is another life after death and the died person soul needs in protection too.

Afterword

Besides stones guardians, there are many of other types of stone sculptures in South Korea culture and history. Some of the stone statues in Korea portrayed people of different social groups. There are military officers, so-called Janggunseok that made of stones too.

If you visit Korea you can find many different stone museums. And most of them are different. For example, on Jeju Island, you can find stone museums with the stones of different shapes that were created by nature. There are stones of shape of human. Museum owners even created different exhibitions which tell a story.

There are plenty of stories and legends about Beoksu. Some stories tell that Beoksu are human kids which were turned into stones by demons.

P.S.: There is a stone art museum in Seoul, but I have never been there yet. Plan to visit it when the situation with COVID-19 will get better...
