the amazing box fish

The yellow boxfish (Ostracion cubicus) are species of boxfish. It are often found in reefs throughout the Pacific and Indian Ocean also because of the southeastern Atlantic. It reaches a maximum length of 45 centimeters(18 in.)

As the name suggests, it is box-shaped. Boxfish also are known for his or her armored and rigid body which in most cases would inhibit locomotion.

This disadvantage is offset by the boxfish's carapace shape which is far more advantageous for its evolved sort of swimming- ostraciiform locomotion. When juvenile, it's bright yellow in color. As it ages, the brightness fades and really old specimens will have blue-grey to black colouration with faded yellow. It feeds mainly on algae, but also will prey on sponges, crustaceans and molluscs.

The fish's diet consists of marine algae, worms, crustaceans, molluscs, and little fish.

When stressed or injured it releases the neurotoxin tetrodoxin (TTX) from its skin which will prove lethal to the fish within the surrounding waters. the brilliant yellow color and black spots are a sort of aposematic coloration (Aposematism) to any potential predators.

They are solitary animals. Breeding occurs during the spring, in small groups that contains 1 male and a couple of - 4 females.

In 2006, Mercedes-Benz unveiled its Bionic concept car, which was inspired by the form of the yellow boxfish.it had been assumed that thanks to the acute agility with which boxfish maneuver, that their shape was aerodynamic and self stabilizing.
