An idea born in 1992

The Great Trail is an idea that emerged in Canada in the early 1990s. A project that was born as a dream of a small group of citizens of that country whose intention was to connect local trails and develop some new ones to create a national network. The intention was none other than to encourage people's contact with nature by safely facilitating access to it while promoting an active and healthy lifestyle and protecting the environment and local resources.

Since that time, under the leadership of Trans Canada Trail, the promoting organisation, and thanks to donations and the help of thousands of volunteers - it is considered the largest volunteer project ever undertaken in the history of the country - the number of connected and marked trails has grown to more than 400 today.

Considered an outstanding account with the indigenous peoples who inhabited this territory and a legacy for future generations of unity between communities and cultures, the result could not be more hopeful and attractive: a network of 27,000 kilometres of marked trails that, after twenty-five years of hard work, we're fully integrated and officially inaugurated as The Great Trail in August 2017, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the founding of Canada.

From eastern to western Canada, through the Arctic territories and across ten of the country's provinces, The Great Trail is a large, fully connected and signposted network of trails that can be undertaken, on its various routes, either on foot, by bicycle, canoe or other similar craft and even snowmobiles - the only motorised vehicles allowed on the network.

The Great Trail also connects 15,000 Canadian communities, including major cities such as Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. Urban, rural, natural spaces... everything has a place in this network of trails that allows you to get to know Canada in-depth with the confidence of the support offered by the organising entity (Trans Canada Trail), which assists in the programming of the routes for those who wish to do them. Also, the network is designed in such a way that the different sections are no more than half an hour from any point inhabited by 80% of the Canadian population. This is a great way to experience a great adventure in one of the largest countries on the planet.
