Winnie the Pooh will become the latest character from a children's book to appear on a 50p coin, complete with a jar of honey, although those hoping to find one in their change will be left feeling sour.....

Launched a little more than a century on from the birth of Christopher Robin Milne (the son of Winnie the Pooh creator A.A. Milne), the Royal Mint said the coin would be the first in a wider collection featuring the characters from the much loved children's books. The Mint teased two other designs for upcoming 50p coins featuring Christopher Robin and Piglet, but if the first coin released from the Hundred Acre Wood proves as popular as previous sets then there is no doubt others will follow.

Winnie the Pooh is the latest family favourite to be brought to life in an official United Kingdom coin collection. Joining the Royal Mints range of family favourites - including:

  • The Tales of Peter rabbit
  • the Gruffalo
  • Paddington Bear
  • Wallace and Gromit
  • The Snowman

The bear, who first appeared in a book of the same name in 1926, follows other much-loved characters from children's books and this brand-new series is a hint of nostalgia for fans of the ‘silly old bear’ and is a great way to introduce Pooh Bear and his friends to a new generation.

However, unlike the first two and other characters from Beatrix Potter's books, Pooh will not be released into circulation and the coin will only be available to buy from the Mint. The NOT being released into general circulation does get my "silver" Spidey senses tingling, and the collector/investor in my will always take a punt on these coins. I can hear @ronaldoavelino already shouting at me.... "don't buy these direct, wait for the secondary market to crash and buy on ebay". He tells me this all the time, and is always right, but I never listen!

The there is no denying that these little silver trinkets are completely over priced, but I think the Royal Mint is learning as it continues to fleece people like me out of my hard earned fiat, by continually reducing the mintage figures of their coins.

The Peter Rabbit collection started with just 30k minted, but after seeing the success of the first coin, immediately raised the remaining coins in the series to 60,000! Paddington Bear and the Gruffalo also had similar minting figures, so to see just 18,010 of these will hopefully drive demand up and see a small profit when I come to resell the ones I have bought.

So my order has been placed, and conformation has been received, once they land on my doormat, I'll do an unboxing and give you guys a better look and show what numbers I got. Here's hoping to very low mintage number as these can carry a higher resale premium.
