General Overview

Anthropogenic activities such as Agricultural practices, Industrialization, Mining, Transportation, and the use of Radioactive substances are increasing with time. These activities exceed the limit of the regeneration capacity of the environment/ecosystem and lead to several environmental consequences.

Honey bees and other insects (pollinators) such as butterflies, hummingbirds, and bats are under increasing threat due to human activities. As I described in my previous https://steemit.com/hive-183959/@ubaidenviro/pollination-by-insect post pollination is one of the basic processes for ecosystem survival. About 90% of the wild flowering plants depend in some way on animal (insect, bird) pollination. These pollinators contribute 75% of pollination in food crops and 35% on average in agricultural land. In simple these pollinators not only contribute to food security but also play an important role in the conservation of biodiversity.

Due to their contribution and importance, the United Nations nominated 20 May as a World Bee Day. The aim of observing this day is to raise awareness of these important pollinators, the present threat they face, and their role in sustainable development. Its vision is to protect bees and another important pollinators that are in serious threat. It is one of the important visions to achieve because we all depend on these pollinators and without these pollinators, we will lose biodiversity.

My Today Contribution

On World Bee Day I visit three beekeeping farms. I arrange the meetings with beekeepers and deliver the importance of beekeeping in the field of biodiversity and Sustainable development. I make them ready to improve their nature toward beekeeping. They agreed and promised that we would try to do our best.

How can we contribute to protecting these pollinators?

Individually

  1. We can plant a diverse set of plants, which flowering time is diverse.
  2. To promote beekeeping, we need to buy honey from beekeepers.
  3. Avoiding or reducing the use of pesticides, insecticides, fungicides, etc.
  4. Wild bee protection as much as possible.

As a farmer or Beekeeper

  1. Reducing the use of pesticides or using less harmful pesticides.
  2. Diversifying agricultural practices such as crop rotation or cropping crops that produce more flowers at diverse times.
