Aeoniums
Aeoniums are native to the Canary islands and grow in the cooler months of the year. That's a bit tricky in my climate because it rains in summer although I find that they don't mind the summer rain if it isn't hot and they have flourished in the cooler, wet summers we've had for the past 2 years.
Although they are supposed to be monocarpic, many of the varieties I have flower ever year and continue growing. I've heard that in the branching varieties such as these, only the head that flowers dies but I haven't noticed that either. Maybe it's because the heads branch a lot too. Who knows?
Yes they don't seem that monocarpic to me either, it looks like just the flower stems die
I read somewhere that they should be very hard grown, if they are fertilised, they flower themselves to death
Mine look pretty hard grown but I like that, it gives them character
I love the little mini-tree look, especially when they also drop roots down from the stems. The smaller varieties are like natural bonsai
Yes! Especially the first one, A. sedifolium
Succulents never do well with fertiliser, I like to leave them in sandy mixes and let them grow slowly
