A. Clustering and Declustering

Clustering : Grouping multiple pseudo wallet addresses owned by the same user or entity into a 'cluster'. Once an address is associated with a known entity (e.g. Binance or a Darknet Market), the remaining addresses in that cluster are also identified.

Declustering : Breaking down large and complex transaction clusters into smaller components, so that the intent behind each component can be understood.

B. Graph Analysis

Blockchain data is viewed as a large graph, where wallet addresses are nodes and transactions are edges.

Following the money trail : Analysts use this graph to follow the flow of transactions ('money trails'), which reveals money laundering techniques (e.g. tumbling, layering) used by criminals.

C. Tumbler/Mixer De-anonymization

Criminals use mixers or tumbler services to hide the source of their cryptocurrency. Forensic tools use advanced heuristics and timed analysis to try to find relationships between mixer inputs and outputs, which helps to find connections between the original source and destination even in disguised data streams.

D. Steering functions & proof of control

Some advanced techniques attempt to prove that the same person controls two different wallets by analyzing the cryptographic functions of the wallet, even if their transaction patterns are different.

Blockchain forensics is not only useful after a crime has been committed; it is also important for real-time monitoring

Use in exchanges : Crypto exchanges (CEX) use these tools to ensure their KYC/AML compliance. They analyze the source of incoming and outgoing funds to immediately identify suspicious activity (e.g. ransomware or money from banned entities).

Risk scoring : Each wallet address is given a risk score based on its transaction history. If an address has transacted with high-risk or banned entities, its score increases.
