History and Culture of Asante

in History and Culture3 years ago (edited)

Hello good people of this great community. This is my first time visiting this community and I wish to be part of you and help grow this amazing community.

I am a Ghanaian and a mixture of two tribes, Ewe and Asante. I love this two tribes but I have lived most of my life in the Ashanti Region. The Asante's are who we call in modern day Ghana Ashanti. We are led by one of the powerful Kings in the world Otumfour Osei Tutu II. Asante's boost of one of great cultural practices in the country.

Royalty is taken from matrimonial line unlike other tribes. The son of the current king can never ascend the throne when he visits his ancestors.

  • The Asante and it's related kingdoms involves a lot if clans who speak the same language that is Asante Twi. In the olden days, these clans had their respective Kings. They were not together so any other tribes could fight and defeat them in battle. Their women will be taken away as slaves and wives in a foreign land. The strongest among the youth will be taken as slaves to work on the farms of their masters.

During the start of slave trade, these slaves were sold to the white in exchange for gun and gun powder and other things for wars to widen their territories.

  • It took a powerful man called Okomfor Anokye to conjure magic and use some Kings as sacrifice to be able to make a golden stool descend from the sky. When that was done, these individual Asante clans came together as one people and as a result of that, they were able to fight and defeat a lot of people to increase the territorial boundaries. They even fought the whites in the Sir Grant war in the 1874

Okomfor Anokye was the friend of Otumfour Osei Tutu I, the first king for the new form Asante empire. The two people help each other and drew the laws and Traditions for the Asante's. They won war and brought respect to the Asante people. The golden stool serves as the soul of the Asante's. There is the believe that, if the golden stool is gone, the spirit of the Ashanti's is no more.

So Ashanti's are not scared when they are faced with trouble because they know because of the golden stool, they will always remain victorious

There is rich history when it come to the Ashanti's. They are the only people in Ghana that celebrate funerals like birthday. We believe, it's a journey so we need to celebrate the life you led while on earth. That will usher you into your next journey to the land of the dead.

Most tribes and cultural clans in Ghana has their own dance and way of dressing. Their kind of music and special instruments used to make these music.

  • The Asante's boost of Kente which is widely spread around the world. Kente is made by hand using special technique.

Kente is worn by Kings in the olden days but recently it is worn be everyone but on special occasions.

Adowa dance and kete is popularly danced in the Ashanti region.

In one of the wars, a queen mother called Nana Yas Asantewaa led men to fight against the white in one of the wars. Nana Yaa's Asantewaa war in 1900 against the British.

The food of the typical Ashanti is fufu. When an Ashanti did to eat fufu made with cassava and plantain or cocoyam pound together to form a ball of fufu. When you get it with some nice soup, you will really understand what local made dish is all about.
