What is a KPI?

A KPI is a central key performance indicator, and it measures how well a business, team, project, or individual delivers on its strategic goals. So it helps you to monitor the strategic goals and objectives of a business project on an individual.

What is SLA?

An SLA stands for service level agreement, and it basically is a wider agreement that you set between a business and a service supplier. So you figure out as a business you might want to have someone to handle your IT support or someone who handles your calls; you then have an agreement with whoever is the provider of that service, this is how you will conduct your business.

How can we differentiate?

As you can imagine, there's an overlap. Sometimes KPIs are part of defining what this service level agreement means?

So what standards of service can you expect, and you can then bring in some of those metrics and KPIs to help you define what you actually mean by service? What do you mean by customer satisfaction?

And you can then use things like quality indicators, customer satisfaction indicators to help you track this.

So basically, a KPI is a strategic metric for business, and SLA is a service level agreement between a service provider and its consumers. And KPI's are very often part of a service level agreement.
