Let’s get started

Agenda:

The agenda today is going to be on:

  • Define Active Listening:
  • Difference between listening and hearing?
  • Types of listening
  • Signs of Active Listening?
  • Barriers to effective listening?
  • Conclusion?

Define Active Listening?

"Effective listening is the process of analyzing sounds, arranging them into recognizable patterns, interpreting patterns, and understanding the message that is understood. Many of the problems people experience in our daily lives are mainly due to ineffective listening or not listening."

So Listening is a process of receiving and reacting to the messages and received by the speaker.

listening can not only be done through the ears or can also be done through the eyes and can also be done by the mind, heart and imagination of the person. So it is not that you only involve your ears in the process of listening. Listening can be done in many other ways as well.

Listening comes first:

Well if you have talk about the communication as a whole , listening Is the top most priority. After listening comes speaking then comes reading and then the last is writing.

Difference between hearing and listening?

We thought that hearing and listening are both the same But these are two different aspects. Let’s understand in detail what exactly is hearing and what exactly is listening. Well Hearing is very mechanical processes. It’s something that you not really involve yourself completely into hearing. Where as when you are hearing its very very accidental. I can be typing a message on mobile or even writing email on my laptop. At the same time listening or hearing to somebody who might be saying something to me. Where as listening is completely focused meaning you do not have to do any kind of multitasking while when you are listening to your people

Hearing is accidentalListening is Focused
Hearing is involuntary. Its mean doing other tasks while you hearing somebody And we can also say that physically present but mental absentListening is voluntary. In Listening I am 100 % there with a person And also say that physically and mentally in both condition we have to present.
Hearing is effortlessListening is intentional

Active Listening – 5 steps:

  • When you are just mechanically hearing everything whatever the other person is saying, you try to take it all the information and actually you filter the important information or the important thing that the other person is saying. So you hear and filter out the important messages and that person’s communication

  • He try to comprehend Comprehending is try to grasp the important messages in that information. Try to grasp the mind.

  • You remember the important information. So out of the important things that the other person’s mind has set. You try to remember new things which you think that the most important information.

  • You need to respond to the person, response to them who are saying you something.

  • And you complete the entire process of listening by understanding what the other person is saying completing it and summarizing it. These are very very important steps of listening or rather I would say active listening.

Types of Listening:

We will now understand the types of listening.

  • Discriminative Listening:

This is the first form of listening which started very very early stage. Perhaps even before in your birth. It means not listening the meaning of the words of the phrases. Understanding the different sounds.

  • Comprehension Listening:

That mean understanding the mean of behind those words and phrases that the speaker has said. Comprehension listening is also known as full listening. Meaning you try to understand the information that the person is saying

  • Evaluative Listening:

It is also known as Critical Listening because you are trying to understand the critically that the person is saying. You try to evaluate the person or the speaker. And when you are a listener. You try to understand whether you are saying. And try to be very judgmental of the listener , that is not correct thing to do.

  • Attentive Listening:

This is very nice type of listening because in this listening you have to pay full attention into the speaker and really focus what they are saying. And that’s giving their attention to the speaker. And that is a very important part of the listener to give your full attention.

  • Selective Listening

The next kind of listening is known as selective listening. It means a part of the information or part of the content that the speaker is particular saying.

  • Empathetic Listening:

This is a kind of listening that I urge all of you listeners to really try an attempt to empathetic listening. It means trying to understand the speaker form his point of view. It mean try to put yourself and understanding the feeling those words and sentences that the speaker is really sharing with you.

Barriers to active listening:

  1. Physical Barrier
  2. Psychological Barriers
Physical barriersPsychological Barrier

poor acousticsDisability
defective mechanical devicesWandering attention
frequent interruptionsPersonal anxiety
uncomfortable environmentAttitude

Signs of Active Listening:

  • Smile
  • Eye contact
  • Posture
  • Distractions

Conclusion:

To conclude the entire module of active listening, we have understood that hearing and listening are two different components. Well hearing is a very mechanical process. Listening is more important and can develop repeated of time. Learn how listen well to your people and learn how to really listen empathetic to your people. Now it’s the end of the post.
