SIZ Education || Benefits of Honey by @drhira
Hi
Hope you all are good.
Do you know the benefits of honey?
Here are its uses and why you should have it at home. But did you know that taking a spoonful of honey before going to bed can help you sleep better?
History of honey in medicinal uses
Throughout history, honey was used as a medicine against different problems, especially respiratory ones, such as coughs.
Recent research about honey
However, some recent studies point out that eating honey before bed can improve sleep quality, especially for sleep troubles associated with other diseases.
According to a scientific study published by the Current Signal Transduction Therapy, certain foods can induce sleep thanks to their tryptophan and ability to stimulate serotonin.
Did you know that?
Tryptophan is an essential amino acid involved in the quality of sleep.
Serotonin induces relaxation and signals to the brain when it is "time to sleep."
But what do these things have to do with honey?
Organic honey is one of the foods that has all of these characteristics.
Actually, its sugars slightly increase insulin, allowing tryptophan to enter the brain.
It stimulates serotonergic activity and melatonin production.
Isn't it incredible?
Melatonin adjusts the body's internal clock and the sleep-wake cycle, Insomniac people or anyone undergoing anxiety from stopping smoking also take melatonin. In these cases, honey could be helpful.
Why it is good for sleep?
- A study published in the magazine Pediatrics says that honey improves sleep in children with a nighttime cough.
- Of course, honey isn't the only treatment against insomnia.
- However, consuming it in small amounts - combined with a healthy lifestyle and adequate sleep- can contribute to a better and more restorative sleep.
- The honey should be organic, preferably from a beekeeper.
- Many brands we buy at supermarkets are highly treated and processed, losing many of their original properties.
- They can also have lots of added sugar.
- According to folk wisdom, we should take 1 tablespoon of honey every night.
- You can also dilute it in a relaxing tea or in a cup of vegetable milk.
- It is important to understand that honey isn't a wonder drug for sleep or to fight insomnia.
Children younger than one mustn't consume honey why?
It might contain Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria that causes botulism.
This disease can cause serious health problems, such as double and blurry vision, photophobia, dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, and compromise the nervous system (trouble swallowing, speaking).
