Hamsters are typically stout-bodied, with tails shorter than body length, and have smal,l furry ears, short, stocky legs and wide feet. They have thick, silky fur, which can be long or short, coloured black, grey, honey, white, brown, yellow, red, or a mix depending on the species.
Hamsters are rodents ( order Rodentia) belonging to the subfamily Cricetinae, which contains 19 species classified in seven genera. The best known species for hamsters is the golden or Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus aurastus).

7 Surprising Facts About Hamsters

  1. There Arere 18 Species Of Hamsters: Hamsters belong to the family cricetidae, which includes voles and lemmings as well as rats and mice. The 18 species of hamsters are quite varied. Some are more ratlike, like the seven members of the cricetulus genus, while the lone member of the cricetus genus, the European or common hamsters has a unique black fur belly.

  2. They Are Prone To Bacteria And Viruses: Hamsters are prone to Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis, a virus that can result in flu_like symptoms. Children under the age of 5 and pregnant adults are particularly at risk.
    The primary methods of zoonotic disease transfer from hamsters and other rodents to humans is through bite, direct contact with the animal, and indirect contact with the contaminated objects.

    Hawaii list of banned animals also includes ferrets, gerbils, hermit crabs, and geckos.

  5. They Hoard Food: Hamsters are built for food storage. Their cheeks are like tiny totes that they can fill with fruits, grains, roots, and leaves. When they find an abundant source of food, they fill there cheek pouches and return to their burrows, where they have prepared food chambers for storage.
    Those cheeks have another use too_ they allow some hamsters to swim by filling them with air so they can float.

  6. They Are Nocturnal Creatures: Since they are prey for so many animals, it's no wonder that most hamsters are nocturnal. They spend there days hiding from snakes, eagles, foxes, badgers and other carnivores. In the world, hamsters dig burrows with deep tunnels and multiple entrance for protection and to sleep during bouts of torpor. Being solitary animal, they mostly spend time in their burrows alone.

  7. They Are Promiscuous: Male and Female hamsters are polygynandrous, they have multiple mates each. During breeding season, male's travel from burrow to burrow and mate with whatever female they find, provider female hasn't already mated. Once she has mated, copulatory plug forms on the female to prevent any further insemination. Hams are territorial, and Female frequently kick the male out after mating.

Female will normally birth two to four litters a year_ there gestation period is only 15 to 22 days_ and litters sizes can range from one to 13young, though the average is around five to seven.

Hamsters like to eat seeds, grains, nuts, cracked corn, fruits and vegetables. Wild Hamsters also eats insects, frog, lizard and other small animals. A captive hamsters diet should be at least 16 percent protein and 5 percent fat.

Conversation Status:

Golden hamsters are concerned vulnerable to extinction by the International Union for Conversation of Nature and Natural resources Red List.
This breed is found in Syria, where agriculture and human development are taken over the hamsters natural habitat.

Other Facts

Generally, hamsters are ideal house pets because they are gentle and are easy to take care of. They will bite when startled or scared, though. They will also bite if they are awarkned during their sleeping time. Since they sleep during the day and humans are awake during the day, this means that biting is more likely.

Hey there, thanks for sharing this interesting information about hamsters! I'm new to this forum, and I've been doing some research on hamsters because my kid wants to get one as a pet. I found your post to be really helpful and informative, especially the fact that they are banned in Hawaii!
