Steemit Engagement Challemge.jpg

Hello friends,

Today I'm going to speak and share my ideas about a very important festival in Srilanka. This is the festival that is celebrated by the whole country apart from the National day. The Sinhala and Tamil New year. Let me share interesting information about the festival.

Tell us, what it consists of?

Sinhala and Tamil new year is a festival celebrated by all SriLankans on 14 th of April. We make many new year food on that day. As a multi cultural country we celebrate the festival all together. Sinhala people make milk rice, oil cakes, kokis, asmee, coconut and sugar balls etc...

Tamils make a milk rice using sugar, plumes, trickle, rice and milk rice. That is very tasty. They also make a special dates cake. Wadei, Doasai and Sambar. They also make honey rings which is very tasty.

We exchange food with our neighbours, and also there is a series of sports that we do on the New year day. swinging, sing new year songs, climbing the greese tree, tug of war, sac race, spoon and lime, pillow fight are most common events on the new year festival.

What is the meaning of this celebration for you?

The New year festival is celebrated by our ancestors celebrating the new year which means the start of the new year. The movement of planet earth is calculated according to the Zodiac cycle. On 14 th of April the Earth moves from Pisces to Aries which is the begining of a new zodiac cycle. The precious time which the earth moves from Pisces to Aries is considered the New year begining and the moment of new year.

People do artificial lights and do fire works at that precious time. People make this precious moment very happy moments by dressing new clothing and also we cook the milk rice in a new pot in a new hearth made of clay. As the word says its new year we are all new on that day, new clothes, new pots and pans to cook, new decorations etc...

For the new year people prepare from weeks before the day by making food and making the houses clean.

How long have you been celebrating it?

As I told above our ancestors start this celebration at the time we didn't have clocks or calenders. They used to celebrtae it by using the stars they did calculations. From that time since those generations we celebrate the New year. It's been many year now. And we still continue to celebrate even in the future.

With whom do you share the joys of this celebration?

We celebrate the joy with everyone around the country. The meaning of the celebration is Unity. So we go visit our neighbours, share food with relatives and neighbours, wish them all success and play the new year games together with everyone.

Hola amiga @nadeesew

Saludos.
