The 46th STORY WRITING CONTEST. / The Race!

This post is in response to the 46th STORY WRITING CONTEST. / The Race! I thank @waqarahmadshah for inviting me here.

Reinaldo, executive of a marketing company, has 1 son, Oscar, who is a great athlete and is training to attend a marathon, that is the discipline of his choice. One day Oscar told his father that they should run together, that this would help him to maintain his health. Reinaldo took it as a joke, however his son insisted, telling him that it was time to take care of himself and running is one of the best ways to do it. Reinaldo told him that he would think about it.

At work, he told his colleagues that he would start running with his son, he said it quite proudly. Of course, there is never a lack of someone who makes unhealthy and tasteless comments. Germán, one of his classmates, told him that at his age that was impossible, that he would never be able to keep up with him and that he was betting that he would stop before completing the first kilometer. Patricia, one of the secretaries encouraged her, commenting that it would be a good experience, that she should try it. That's when the boss arrives and asks about what's going on, Germán comments in a mocking tone that Reinaldo was crazy, he was planning to run the marathon in the city in 3 months with his son, his boss looked at him and asked him if he was serious, to which Reinaldo said yes, but there was a very long silence...

Now it's my turn to tell you what's my story.

Reinaldo, the executive of a marketing company, looked at his son, Oscar, who indeed is a great athlete and has already won a number of medals in various running competitions.

But Oscar insisted that he should run with him to show the world that you can do anything if you commit yourself and do it with your willingness to do it.

Oscar said, "Dad, this would help you maintain your health."

Reinaldo looked at his son and thought, "Why not?"

He told his son that he would do it, but not to win the prize money but for the sake of charity.

Oscar looked at him questioningly, but Reinaldo patted his hand and said, "I will let you know when the time is right."

The next day, Reinaldo told his colleagues that he was planning a marathon with his son and would begin practicing for it the next day. His colleagues did not believe him.

"Are you serious?" German from the group called out loud! "Are you planning to kill yourself?"

Yep, I would start running with my son, and the sparks in his eyes dazzled his coworkers. He said it quite proudly.

Then he looked at Patricia, one of the secretaries, who said, "Do it, man, at least you will have some nice running practice besides an experience that will be one of your life's achievements."

That's when their boss arrived in the meeting room and asked about what was going on in there.

Germán was still joking and said in a taunting tone, "Reinaldo believes he can win the marathon, so he is planning a race in the city in 3 months with his son."

His boss looked at him and asked him if he was serious, to which Reinaldo said yes, and a long silence followed...

Finally, his boss told Reinaldo to go ahead, and in case he needed any assistance, he was ready to provide it.

Reinaldo 55, started his practice the next day, and with every passing day he was feeling more confident. He knew pretty well that he was going to be the oldest runner to participate in the marathon.

Soon, the three months passed, and Reinaldo was doing his best. On Friday, Reinaldo achieved this feat when he crossed the finish line of the marathon.

He completed the race in 3 hours, 41 minutes, and 58 seconds. His son Oscar remained at number 2. He completed the race in 3 hours, 44 minutes, and 19 seconds.

"Did you do it intentionally?" Reinaldo looked at him with doubts in his eyes.

"No, Dad, you did it."

The director of the marathon praised Reinaldo, saying, "This is wonderful, you will always inspire athletes to participate, no matter how old they are."

Reinaldo received the prize money of $50,000, which he gifted to charity for the upcoming athletes who did not have enough means for preparation. Next Monday, Reinaldo entered his office with his head held high, and German was the first to congratulate him.
