SEC-S10W2 | my languages
This is my second entry for the week and it will just be as good if not better than my first entry. All you need to do is relax and read through for your warm peace. I will be writing about my language and all that concerns it within my country and beyond. Others which I have also gained their listening, writing, and speaking skills will also be highlighted during my stay with you here.
Languages as we all know are means of effectively communicating between two or more persons. It is either done through oral means where the mouth is observed muttering words or through sign languages where the hands and fingers do the demonstration. In all of this, the end product is effective communication where understanding is achieved between both parties.

How many languages do you speak? Which of them are your native languages and which ones have you studied? |
---|
At present, I speak about three (3) different languages as means of communication. Though the fourth language was still in the process before I got disconnected from the environment. I am from the southeastern part of Nigeria which makes me have my native language to be Igbo.
But at the same time, It happened that I grew up on the northern side of the country. The northern side of the country predominantly has a language called the Hause. Therefore I was also able to study and speak this language fluently.
On the other hand, due to the multicultural and multiethnicity nature country of my country and also the colonial lineage, the English language was adopted as its official language. This was also studied in school and used as a means of communication against the diverse space.
During my compulsory one-year National Youth Service Corps program in the southwestern region, I was opportune to learn the Youruba language but unfortunately, this was abruptly interrupted due to my short stay. However, some of the languages spoken are well understood by me.
Last but not least is the Pidgin language that I am still in limbo about how it came about in my country and how everyone has also adopted it as a means of communication. Aside from the centrally accepted English language, pidgin is another generally accepted language that allows both the young, old, educated, and non-educated to speak during the interaction.
Language type | Status |
---|---|
Igbo | Native |
English | Studied |
Hausa | Studied |
Youraba | Still studying |
Pidgin | Native |
What methods have you used to learn other languages?? |
---|
For the native language which is domiciled in our different homes, learning it has been fundamental. This is usually the language of communication at home most times, and hence learning it is usually basic to other things to communicate.
The English language, it is taught in school because of its official status in the country. This is why most educated persons in the country communicate with it. It is the language of instruction in all schools.
For the Hausa language, I was privy to learning and studying this language due to environmental exposure. I grew up among these people in their region, and hence it was easy for me to pick up their native language while growing up. This was also applicable to the Yoruba language though abruptly interrupted.
In addition to the ones you already speak, what other language would you like to learn?? |
---|
I should be willing to complete the learning process of the Yoruba language first before the interruption caused due to relocation after the NYSC program. However, my preferred language of study would be a little international and no other language but French.
What do you consider to be the most difficult thing about learning another language? |
---|
There are some who have the ability to pick up languages of other people without difficulty while others would have to toll the ground hard before they do. In my family, I believe we are easy grabbers of language each time we are exposed to them without having to pass through any formal education.
However, basically, it is always a tedious task to learn languages in adulthood. Though very possible and sometimes easy would have been more fluent from childhood. There are basic rules and guidelines for every language which we must attend to.
Why do you think it is important to master several languages? |
---|
Mastering several languages is a good one. It does not only place you above equals in securing job offerings due to the communication advantage but also puts you ahead of predisposed danger.
One would be able to sense danger from the surrounding environment easier due to its ability to eir language, unlike a novice.
There is no limitation to anywhere or interaction one cannot engage in. Due to mastery of different languages, communicating is a lot easier, and interactions and executions are also seamless.
It makes one sense of home in a foreign land and as well attracts some level of hospitality oneself.
In conclusion, languages are the mouthpiece of people. The more languages we are exposed to also determine the culture and means of doing things we learn from others. They are the gateways that ensure hospitality, friendliness, security, and better offerings.
