They call them street boys and girls. They are the most looked down on because majority fear the reasons why they are in the streets. Why are they found in the streets? Someone asked this question and got the reply that they have no homes. They are called homeless people. They live on the streets, corners, bridges and uncompleted buildings.

I can recall a time where a young boy was spotted lying by the roadside with wrappers wrapped round his body. I felt pity for this boy. Why are they homeless and why is warring problem? These questions would be answered in the course of this post.

Are there homeless people in your country?

From analysis, it's shown that my country Nigeria is ranked the first country with the most homeless people of about 25 million which is 10% of our population. If it could be ranked first out of all the countries worldwide to have the most homeless people, then there must be a problem somewhere that needs to be addressed.

An American once said that when he came to Nigeria, the people he saw on the streets were nothing different from garbages. They were dirty, wild and mad so to speak. He thought of helping a few of them as they were everywhere, little children especially

This is no news or new things. There's no busy area you go in Nigeria you won't find children on the streets. Most of them grew up were brought up, raised, fed, associated and did everything in the streets. This influence of living in the streets instead of a home make them become tauts or probably join cults that may change their perspectives about humans who they feel are heartless.

What causes this homelessness? Is it that they have no parents or their parents have no money to rent a house to contain them? The following shows why children are homeless and on the streets.

What do you think is the cause that leads these people to be on the street, homeless and without a family?

There are a 101 causes of why these people are on the streets especially children. I'll attribute one of the major reasons to lack of education. Why do I say so? This reason may sound absurd but it's one of the major reasons that controls other reasons. How ?

You know very well that you barely have enough to feed yourself but you keep on producing more children. Just imagine a woman having 10 children and she's not even middle-class. She's extremely poor. How does she take care of these children? Those with money, the rich and middle-class are even considerate when it comes to child bearing. They have what it takes to raise 10 children but they always seek 1 or 2 children at most.

When the poor aren't educated on birth control or family planning, they have this thought that plenty children brings about more money and laborers in the farm. They end up making the lives of these children miserable. These children not receiving the care they see other children receive, leave home and enter the street.

Homeless boy involved in stealing and got caught

Some families like these don't even care for their children or give them time. The consequences are sad. These children involve themselves in social vices and end of being tauts because they seek the street for comfort, friends and families.

Poverty is the root cause of people being homeless. If they have money to purchase a house, rent it or even build theirs, do you think they'll be on the streets begging? It's because they don't have this income to rent a room for their shelter, they are seen on the streets. Neglect too contributes. When parents overlook the responsibilities of their children, it becomes a problem. They abandon these children, leaving them all alone to cater for themselves.

These are major causes of homeless people in my country that needs to be addressed.

Natural disastersBreakdown in familyUnemployment
Has the government tried to try or create decent shelters to help these people?

In my country, it's a warring problem but the governments aren't really taking it as a priority. This have been overlooked for other matters because they feel it's not about taking 25 million homeless ones in, it's also about taking care of these ones. They give the excuse that they run orphanage homes which is a great achievement..

Anyways, they have tried in doing a few but there are still 85% of homeless people out there on the streets with no help. I think the governments should channel their resources into developing or solving this problem, at least reducing the rate of homeless people in the country. They have worked on some projects which includes housing projects and social welfare programmes.

What could you propose so that these people do not remain in this dark world?

What I propose is to tackle those problems associated with homelessness which includes;

Educating parents on child birth and family planning especially those who are less privileged and have barely enough to sustain them, talkmore of sustaining those they bring into the world. It's better to not to bring them into the world at all to suffer.

As to poverty which has made majority homeless because of high cost of housing, the government should provide houses that are affordable for these ones or better still provide lots of employment opportunities for both educated and uneducated. This is will help reduce the rate of poverty in the country, thereby helping the masses earn a living enough to settle life's problems.

Provision of basic amenities, skill acquisition programs, empowerments and relief programs to those who are homeless probably due to natural disasters and the likes of them. This will go a whole lot to helping these ones. This picture shows one way I propose these homeless ones should be helped.

How I wish I am the president of my country? Seeing homeless people sleeping under the bridge and incompleted building makes me feel so emotional. Are there not humans? The government don't care because they don't understand what it means to sleep in places you can't describe as home. Government aside, which citizens can also be of help to this homeless people because it's not mostly their fault. Some are rejected, we should approach them with love, help them with the little we have, draw them close to us and finally assure their hope about the new life on earth which is fast approaching. You're a good writer, keep it up.

25 million people? It's easier said than done. There are many reasons for this homelessness. Even if you were the president, you won't be able to do this to the fullest even though you may do half of it. Anyways, thanks for checking on my post. You too are a creative writer.

You're right though, but the number keeps increasing everyday. Hmmm God will come through for us.

I can't stand seeing people living under bridges,or living on the street or being homeless. Sha some of them it is their fault, they refuse to go to school which is lack of education.maybe their parent pay their school fees but they refuse to go to school . At times poverty also contribute to homelessness.
At times it marvels me if the government does not cares about them. Imagine the government moving about seeing homeless people around and not doing anything,it is so irritating and so embarrassing. I think the best thing to do is to help them and the government has to do something about it

I appreciate your participation you wrote very well in answer for the questions along with a great pictorial demonstration as well as I agree with you that Nigeria is ranked at top list regarding homeless people ratio and their are 10% of a population is homeless and I agree that poverty is behind as a root cause so there's are requirement to deal with root cause.

I wish much success to you in this engagement challenge.

Really great explanations, I which the Nigerian Stake Holders will all see this post if they can change for good and try helping the homeless

The rate at which these people are increasing is questionable, is it that living in the street is now the new trend or there's something we need to know. Well you have outlined important tips that can help curtail this problem. I pray the appropriate authorities take note of these tip and make it their top priority.

Uneducated people are making lives uneasy for themselves, producing lots of children that may be rendered homeless at some point. Thanks for commenting

Hola amiga.

Saludos y bendiciones.

Hello @bossj23 hope your day is going well
It's sad to see so many homeless people in Nigeria, especially children. Poverty and lack of education on family planning are big reasons why this happens. Families sometimes have more kids than they can afford to take care of. The government should focus on helping these people by giving them affordable homes and jobs.
