Maize is a high-yielding grain crop. Maize cultivation is increasing in our country. Maize is a perennial herb. The male flowers are arranged in a panicle and emerge at the head of the plant. Female flowers emerge from the axils of stems and leaves at mid-height of the plant. When the female flower is fertilized, grains are formed inside the flower. Compared to rice and wheat, female corn kernels have higher nutritional value. Green leaves are used as high quality fodder. Maize grains are in great demand in our country as feed for cattle, poultry and fish.

What is corn plant?

Corn is a food crop. The origin of this cereal is Mesoamerica. There are several types of corn.

Varieties :

Agricultural research institutes of our country have developed high yielding and hybrid varieties of maize. Shubra, Bari Maize-5, Bari Maize-6, Bari Maize-7, Bari Hybrid Maize-1, Bari Hybrid Maize-2, Bari Hybrid Maize-3 are among them.

Soil:

Sandy loam and loam soil in our country is suitable for maize cultivation.

Sowing time:

October-November in Rabi season and mid-February-March in Kharip season is the best time to sow seeds.

Seed Rate and Sowing Method:

Seed is sown in rows at the rate of 25-30 kg per hectare for Bari maize and 15-20 kg per hectare for Khai maize. Distance from row to row will be 75 cm and 1 tree at 25 cm distance or 2 trees at 50 cm distance should be kept in row.

Land preparation and fertilizer application:

Maize cultivation is more in rabi season. Land should be prepared with 4-5 deep plows and hoes. At the end of land preparation, the land should be cultivated by sprinkling urea fertilizer with other fertilizers. Zinc Sulphate 10-15 kg per hectare. Good yield is obtained if manure is applied. Urea fertilizer should be applied once in the first stage after 25-30 days of seed germination and in the second stage after 40-50 days of seed germination. After the seedlings grow, the excess seedlings should be removed from the land. The land should be kept free of weeds until the seedlings are one month old.

Irrigation Application:

High yielding varieties require 3-4 irrigations in rabi season to get desired yield. The first irrigation should be given at the 5-leaf stage, the second at the 10-leaf stage, the third irrigation at the time of leaf emergence and the fourth irrigation before the grain is set. Care should be taken so that water does not accumulate on the land.

Maize harvesting and threshing:

When the pods are bright straw colored and the leaves are slightly yellow, the maize is ready to be harvested for grain. The crop can be harvested when the canopy is 75-80% mature. Matcha should be dried for 4-5 days after collection. Then by hand or powered threshing machine, the grain should be removed and stored.
