Miniature roses are true roses that have been selectively bred to remain small in size. Most miniature roses have smaller flowers than standard rose bushes, but they come in as many varieties and colors as their larger counterparts. In fact, because they are propagated on their own roots (and not planted on root stock), they are more winter hardy and bloom more frequently than most roses.
Miniature roses have been cultivated since the 17th century, but most originate as genetic variations of old garden roses or China roses, which are native to Asia. They retain many basic characteristics and perform best if planted in the spring.
Miniature roses grow moderately fast and work well in a border or as a garden edging. They are also particularly good as specimen plants in containers, where they can be brought up close to eye level and really seen and appreciated.
Plant your miniature rose bushes the same way you plant full-sized roses. Dig a planting hole as deep as the roses came in, and about a foot wide. Carefully remove the rose plant from the pot and gently loosen the roots. If the plant's roots are tightly bound, use a sharp knife to round the sides of the root ball and try to loosen the roots.
If your soil needs it, add some organic matter to the hole, then place the rose bush in the center of the hole, with the roots spread out. Fill with soil and tamp it down gently, watering well before applying a layer of mulch. Since miniature roses also have smaller roots than standard roses, mulch will help protect the roots from the cold as well as retain moisture.
Like all roses, miniature varieties thrive in full sun. Although they can tolerate some shade, they often have fewer leaves and flowers in shady conditions. A minimum of six to eight hours of sunlight per day should result in excellent disease resistance and a bush full of full blooms.
