Beautiful Chetalpa Flowers Photography
Chetalpa Flowers |

Growth Habit |
---|
Chetalpa trees have a low canopy that is round or vase-shaped up to 30 feet wide. A chitalpa can grow 35 feet tall at a rate of 3 feet per season, but usually does not exceed 25 feet. Its branches have a medium-weak rating, so Chetelpas is not a good choice for windy areas.
Sun, Soil and Moisture |
---|
Chetalpa trees are known to tolerate long periods of drought. They do well in sites that receive full sun to partial shade and in dry to moist, loamy or sandy soils with a slightly acidic to highly alkaline pH. Chitalpa trees grow best in full sun with moderately moist soil and are longest in partial shade. If you plant Chetilpa trees on the east side of your house, make sure the soil is well-drained.
Leaves, Flowers and Fruit |
---|
Chetilpa trees provide moderate shade. They are deciduous, and their oval, lance-shaped, gray-green leaves add color to your landscape when they turn golden in fall. Once the leaves fall, their grayish-white, rough bark provides winter landscape interest. In spring, summer or fall, depending on your climate zone, this tree produces beautiful flowers with large, lavender or pink petals. The flowers turn into very large, elongated, often over 3-inch-long green seed capsules that attract wildlife and can become a litter problem when they fall to the ground.
Pests and Disease |
---|
Chetilpa trees are susceptible to aphids, root with verticillium wilt. Aphid infestations are usually eliminated when warm weather arrives, or you can knock them off the tree with a strong spray from a garden hose. Root rot can be prevented by planting in a well-drained site and not overwatering. Some species of the fungus cause verticillium wilt, which can be controlled by cutting off affected branches as soon as possible.
