AMALA and EGUSI soup

IMG_20230424_162254_6.jpg

The picture of the food shown above is called Amala and Egusi soup, it is a local food known to have originated from Nigeria and is well consumed in the south-east and south-western part of the country (Nigeria). Amala and Egusi soup is one of my favorite Nigerian dishes that i consume atleast twice a week. It is a very rich diet combination that is good for the body and impels balance diet.

  • Amala;
    Amala floor is gotten from yam. The yam is cut into pieces or sliced into small portions and dried such that it moisture content become very low. The dried yam is then grinded and the floor is ready. Water is boiled upto 100° then amala floor is added to it, stir through with a turner or stick till it suits the thickness you want and Amala is ready.
  • Egusi;
    Egusi is a seed gotten from Cucumeropsis mannii, the seed is dried up, peeled and grinded. Can be prepared by boiling either fish meat, adding salt, onions, spice, palm oil and crayfish, pepper and other spice of choice. After boiling for 15mins, add the Egusi powder and then vegetables, allow to cook for a while and egusi soup is ready.

What makes your chosen dish so special to you?

It is my favorite dish and so special because Egusi on one side is very delicious, medicinal and also nutritious. Aside from the nutritional benefits, it is one of the most popular soup consumed in almost every region of my country. Amala on the other hand is so special to me because; it is soft, smooth, nutritious, easy to make and reduces waste of yam peels. I also like the colour and prefer it to other swallow foods.

What is the story of your food captured photos ?

I took the picture of the food posted above the first time i was able to prepare it😊. For a very long time i have been eating Egusi and Amala prepared by others and buying from restaurant. That very day, i want to know how it is been prepared, so i called my elder sister on video call and she taught me every step i need to take to prepare it and it was a success. After preparing it for the very first time, i decided to snap it with my phone and send to her, also i snapped it to keep memory.

What emotions do you wish to convey?

Amala and Egusi soup is a very delicious delicacy that brings joy and satisfaction. I was very excited when i first prepared it and it seem exciting anytime i want to have it especially for lunch or dinner. I could remember having it with my friends one time for dinner and the excitement on their faces was amazing.

Food captured with yummy thought is a very interesting topic. So many dishes from difficult country are amazing and i personally lik trying out new dishes. On this note, I'll like to invite every other steemian especially my friends @samuelebuka @mfdo and @solexybaba to post their entry on this contest and showcase their favorite dishes.

Sure, I will try 👌.

Awwwn this looks so yummy and delicious 😋 Amala is one of nicest food in Nigeria, I'm coming home to share with you. Best of luck in your contest brother.

Ohh, how much do you love egusi soup, I have tasted this delicacy several times but never with amala. I never knew Amala was this brownish, I always thought it was a very whitish swallow since it is gotten from yam. It is true from your write-up that egusi soup is suitable for consumption as lunch and dinner. Many say eating heavy food at night may cause a runny stomach but egusi soup after eating brings comfort. You have made such a great publication and i am glad to read through and learn as well

Thank you so much @nsijoro for the comment
I appreciate ✌🏾
