Favorite cultural Food // The South African braai!

“It is a fact that men are the best cooks” this according to chef John Burton Race.

Women might be known to be associated with the word “kitchen” but for me when it comes to men I just find our specie more adventurous.
But, we are not going to argue today about who is the better chef. Today I want to tell you about my favourite cultural food, the “South African braai”!

Am sure you are all wondering what a “braai” is.

A “braai” is the South African equivalent to a barbeque. The difference is that a traditional braai happens around a fire and not on a gas grill. It is gathering of families and friends around the fire for hours on end even after the food has been eaten.

Some more facts about the South African braai;

• Most South African’s braai at least once a week and don’t need an excuse or celebration to braai
• Most South African’s lit their fire for those braai’s on a Sunday
• Braai’s can take place anytime of the day even for breakfast
• South Africans will braai anywhere, at home, at the dam and even next to the sport fields
• South Africans will braai anything! Steak, chicken, lamb chops, pork ribs, vegetables like corn on a cob and even “braaibroodjie”. Similar to a toasted with tomato, onion and lots of cheese
• It is a MUST to braai “boerewors”. A traditional sausage made from ground beef combined with pork and spices of which coriander seeds is a must
• Come sunshine or rain, we braai! Fire’s will be lit on patios and even in garages if it rains
• Braai is a tradition shared by ALL South Africans regardless of religion, race or culture
• Braai’s unites a Nation! We have a National “Braai day”. On 24 September each year we celebrate Heritage day. This is also a public holiday celebrated by South Africans. The smells as you drive around your neighbourhood is mouth-watering!

For me a braai is just so much more than a meal. A beer in the one hand and a lamb chop in the other hand is all that is need to make men the best chefs ever!

Time to light that fire!

On my braai today you will find;
• The famous “boerewors”
• Lamb chops
• Lemon and herb marinated chicken wings and
• “Braaibroodjies” to be added next
