---|
RCB stands for Red Blood Cell.
Phagocytosis:
It's the process by which old RCBs are removed from circulation. It occur as the old RCBs changes their cell membrane and is then recognized by macrophages. Macrophages engulf and digest the old RCBs. Hence they are removed from the circulation.
Life Span:
The lifespan of the RCBs are 120 days or 4 months. After this duration, speen and liver destroyed them and are removed from the circulation.
Erythropoiesis:
It's the production of the new RBCs. It occurs in the bone marrow. The process includes the following steps:
- Erythropoietin production
- Stem cell commitment
- Erythroid progenitor cells
- Normoblasts
- Reticulocytes
- Erythrocytes
The process take place in bone marrow and takes around 7 days to complete. After the process, new RBCs are formed.
