The British implemented divide and rule theory dates back in 1880 when for the first time two Nations theory was discussed.
As a result of that Hindu and Muslim unity contracted. 1925 saw rise in the Hindu and Muslim separatists idea.
In 1945, Viceroy Wavell stated that Winstan Churchill favoured a partition. In 1946 a election was called in British India. In this election both got electorates according to their religion.
An important fact that was not highlighted was specific criteria of voters eligibility which was not based on universal franchise in this election.
Only three percent of total population was allowed to vote. Basically it was a election for upper class people only. The average person did not get chance to perticipate in the election. Just after the election large scale violence was seen. Mahatma Gandhi went to Noakhali to protect innocent victims. Jinha claimed that India should either be divided or destroyed.
14 August 1947, is considered as the partition day. But on that day the partition was merly formalised.
Several Leaders as well as political parties were against the partition. In fact persons like Mahatma Gandhi and Khan Adul Gaffar Khan did not accept the partition till the end.
But due to conditions imposed on the would be Undivided India was more vulnerable towards soviornity and integrity of India, the Congress was forced to accept the plan of separation at the end because of the Cabinet Mission plan. The central government under that plan would have been very week.
Unfortunately Jinha refused the post of Prime Minister twice offered to him by Mahatma Gandhi and others.
The partition would have been prevented if Mahatma Gandhi would have been able to convince Jinha to give up his idea of partition and Jinha accepting the same. Perhaps the partition would have been avoided.
If East Germany and West Germany could reunite. If North Vietnam and South Vietnam could reunite. Why can't India and Pakistan reunite.
The sentiment of reunification need to come among the people of two nations.
Eventually step by step how European Union was formed. This is how a Asian Union can be formed.
