Government regulations on media content: Are there restrictions on certain topics? |
---|
In my country Nigeria, we have the freedom of expression which is guided by section 39 (1) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria constitution, stating that;
Section 39 (1)
(1) Every person (citizen of the country) shall be entitled to freedom of expression, including the freedom to hold opinions and also to receive and impart information and ideas without any interference.
But despite the constitutional protection given, the Nigerian media was still controlled and monitored by the government all throug it's history, which has made it quite difficult letting out some certain topics on air.
And from the observations towards my country's restrictions on some certain topics. I have figured out thereabout three of them that tends to be a huge crisis facing Nigeria my country. I will list and discuss briefly on them.
- Corruption.
- Insecurity.
- Unemployment.
Corruption |
---|
Corruption is found at every level of Nigerian government. From the petty bribery, embezzlement, contract fraud at the top, seizing of salaries, laundering schemes, it is examined that the country cost of corruption within the state apparatus will increase to billions of dollars yearly.
Corruption is potent cancer that has mercilessly eaten Nigeria to a state of stupor.

Insecurity |
---|
The increased rate of insecurity in Nigeria has become an overnight something of grave concern to all indigenous citizens. The problem keeps increasing and right now, it's totally out of control. Insecurity have simply been seen as a recurring phenomenon that have risen broadly to threaten the well-being of the citizens of Nigeria.
Unemployment |
---|
A rise in unemployment could mean the sum number of people going in search of jobs has increased. And this particular topic is barely been spoken on, rather they tend to focus on furnishing and furbishing their homes and touch lightning few country issues.
Media bias and political influence: Do you think media outlets lean towards specific ideologies or not? |
---|
The Mainstream bias has the tendency to report what every other person else is reporting, inorder to avoid stories that will upset the masses. While the Partisan bias, has the tendency to submit report to serve a particular political party leaning.
The media outlet most times don't get satisfied with the information you give them, therefore they try to get the full gist of a situation. Although they point at a particular idealogy to fight and find out the root of the topic in discussion. But right in the spot where they are trying to gather information, they also tend to touch light other areas then gradually dig deep into them one after the other.
I could use my sister as a case study who studies Mass communications, she tend to be active when it comes to seeking and gathering information. Even in natural discuss, she would want to get to the root of the matter with her collective information.
Media ownership and concentration: Who owns major media outlets (Channels)? |
---|
The various media outlet and their owners will be listed below;
