Hold your breath for something really cute and ...extremely interesting. For many people, lunch or dinner is not complete without dessert. And the story of desserts is more than a story about the first ice cream cone. Sweets date back to ancient times, where people enjoyed fruits and nuts sweetened with honey. However, the desserts that are commonly known today became popular through the evolution of technology and culinary experimentation.

In ancient times, people consumed different types of food. Ancient civilizations, from time to time, indulged in some sweet treats made from fruits or nuts with honey. This is essentially considered the progenitor of the candy. In general, however, it wasn't until sugar began to be produced in the Middle Ages that people began to create sweets. Back then, sugar was so expensive that it was a luxury reserved only for the rich on special occasions. However, beginning around 3000 BC, there is a notable and traceable history of desserts.

Ice cream has been dated to around 3000 BC. and may have been the first "dessert" in the sense in which it is known today. It was, in fact, the invention of the Chinese, but it was quite different from the ice cream we enjoy eating today

Although vanilla is not a dessert per se, it certainly plays a major role in many desserts, especially ice cream. Vanilla is the pod of a specific type of orchid that grows in Mexico. Somehow the natives of this region discovered its strong taste, for which it is still known today. Contrary to popular belief, Mexican Indians do not use it to flavor cocoa. But definitely vanilla gives a strong impetus to the development of technology for making desserts.

This tradition of ending the meal with a little sweet has its origins in France. The French dessert has been around for centuries, but it has changed a lot in that time.

Medieval and Renaissance French cookbooks don't exactly feature desserts. Instead, they include recipes for "interval" dishes served between mains, which can be sweet or savory. In a courtly context, such a dish is known as le fruit, but the bourgeois
renamed dessert.

The word "dessert" appeared in the 17th century, derived from the French verb desservir, which means "to clear the table". In the 17th and 18th centuries, cookies, marzipan, meringue or frozen fruit were mostly served, often with jam. Slowly, however, the taste of desserts becomes less important than their visual presentation. Really precisely made sugar figures become the center of desserts in France.

Dessert connoisseurs in the 18th century had to understand architectural design and be able to fill it with sugar. Today of course sugar is cheap enough and mass-produced versions of French pastries are readily available to people all over the world.
